AN ORDINANCE of the City of Port Angeles
establishing a one -year probationary
period for Civil Service employees and
creating a new Chapter 2.22 of the Port
Angeles Municipal Code.
WHEREAS, Chapters 41.08 and 41.12 RCW and the Rules of
the Port Angeles Civil Service Commission provide for a six -month
maximum probationary period for Civil Service employees; and
WHEREAS, the Port Angeles Police and Fire Departments
concur that six months is an inadequate probationary period
within which to observe and evaluate performance due to increas-
ing length of training periods and scheduling requirements; and
WHEREAS, the Port Angeles Civil Service Commission
agrees that a one -year probationary period should be adopted and
has requested the City Attorney to propose to the City Council an
ordinance to that effect; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT
ANGELES as follows:
Section 1. There is hereby established a Civil Service
Commission and a Civil Service system of employment in the Police
and Fire Departments. The Civil Service Commission and the Civil
Service system shall operate in compliance with Chapters 41.08
and 41.12 RCW except as otherwise provided in this Ordinance.
Section 2. There is hereby established a one -year pro-
bationary period for all Civil Service positions in the classi-
fied Civil Service as defined in Chapters 41.08 and 41.12 RCW.
The Rules of the Port Angeles Civil Service Commission shall be
amended to extend the probationary period for Civil Service
employees in the Police and Fire Departments to one year.
Section 3 Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take
effect as provided by law.
