AN ORDINANCE of the City of Port Angeles
relating to the height of railings around
porches, terraces or landings, and amending
Sections 13 and 14 of Article IX of the
Zoning Code, Ordinance No. 1709.
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the City of
Port Angeles that the Zoning Ordinance not conflict with the
Uniform Building Code; and
WHEREAS, a public hearing has been held on resolving
this conflict; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ANGELES DOES
ORDAIN as follows:
Section 1. Sections 13 and 14 of Article IX of
Ordinance No. 1709 are each amended to read as follows:
Section 13 - PERMITTED INTRUSIONS INTO REQUIRED YARDS.
The following intrusions may project into any required yards:
1. Fireplace structures not wider than eight (8) feet
measured in the general direction of the wall of which it is a
part: thirty (30) inches.
2. Unenclosed, uncovered porches, terraces or landings,
when not extending above the first floor of the buildings may
extend not more than six (6) feet in the front, eight (8) feet in
the rear, and three (3) feet in the side yard into any required
yard, provided however, an open railing or grillwork xet

Uniform Building Code may be constructed around any such porch,
terrace or landing.
3. Planting boxes of masonry planters not exceeding thirty
(30) inches in height may extend a maximum of three (3) feet into
any required front yard.
4. Eaves with a maximum overhang of thirty (30) inches.
5. Detached accessory building on rear one third of lot
only are permitted not closer than three (3) feet to side nor ten
(10) feet to rear property lines or alleys.
Section 14 - LOT COVERAGE EXEMPTIONS. The following
shall be exempt from the maximum lot coverage requirements of any
of the several zones:
1. Sidewalks, driveways and uncovered off- street parking
spaces.
2. The first thirty (30) inches of eaves.
3. Uncovered swimming pools and hot tubs.
4. Uncovered and unenclosed concrete, brick and stone
patios, wood decks and platforms not more than thirty (30) inches
above grade, provided however an open railing or grillwork stet

Uniform Building Code may be constructed above any such patio,
deck or platform.
Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect five (5)
days following date of publication.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Angeles
at a regular meeting of said Council held on the 17th day of May,
1988.
