HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 06/29/1993 2508 CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING Port Angeles, Washington June 29, 1993 CALL TO ORDER - Mayor Hallett called the special meeting of the Port Angeles City Council to order SPECIAL MEETING: at 6:05 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: Mayor Hallett, Councilmen Braun and Ostrowski, Councilwoman Sargent, and Councilmen Schueler and Wight. Members Absent: None - one position vacant. Staff Present: Manager Pomeranz, Attorney Knutson, Clerk Upton, and K. Godbey. Public Present: None signed in. Interview Candidates Interview Candidates for Vacancy on City Council for Vacancy on City Council The purpose of this special meeting was to interview the candidates and make an appointment to fill the vacancy on the City Council. Prior to the interviews, the Council held a discussion as to how the appointment would be made. Based on input from Attorney Knutson, the Council decided by consensus to conduct an Executive Session to evaluate the candidates and review their qualifications. Further, the Council decided by consensus to cast written ballots identifying each Council member and each Council member's preferred candidate with the results of the balloting to be tallied and read aloud by the City Clerk. The Council then proceeded to interview the following: Cathleen McKeown, Jim Hulett, Danetta Rutten, Donald Bettger, Julie Bondy, and Cindy Souders. Break Mayor Hallett recessed the meeting for a break at 8:15 p.m. The meeting reconvened at 8:24 p.m. ADJOURN TO The meeting was adjourned to Executive Session at 8:27 p.m. to evaluate the EXECUTIVE candidates and review their qualifications for approximately fifteen minutes. At 8:45 SESSION: p.m., Attorney Knutson advised the members of the public that the City Council would need approximately fifteen more minutes for the Executive Session. RETURN TO OPEN The meeting returned to open session at 9:09 p.m. SESSION: Mayor Hallett commented on the excellence of the candidates and the difficulty in making a decision. The Council then cast written ballots and forwarded them to Clerk Upton who tallied and read aloud the votes, as follows: Councilman Wight cast a ballot for Jim Hulett, Councilman Schueler cast a ballot for Donald Bettger, Councilwoman Sargent cast a ballot for Jim Hulett, Councilman Ostrowski cast a ballot for Jim Hulett, Mayor Hallett cast a ballot for Cindy Souders, and Councilman Braun cast a ballot for Jim Hulett. By receiving the majority of the votes, Jim Hulett was appointed to the City Council. Mayor Hallett indicated Mr. Hulett will be administered the oath of office on July 6, 1993. Congratulations were extended to Mr. Hulett. The members of the Council expressed their appreciation to all applicants and noted the qualifications were so impressive that the decision-making process was extremely difficult. Additionally, the unsuccessful candidates were encouraged to mn for a seat on the City Council in the upcoming election. -1- 2509 CITY COUNCIL MEETING June 29, 1993 ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. -2-
