CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING
Port Angeles, Washington
July 18, 1997
CALL TO ORDER - Mayor Ostrowski called the special meeting of the Port Angeles City Council to order at
SPECIAL MEETING: 10:00 a.m.
ROLL CALL: Members Present: Mayor Ostrowski, Councilmembers Braun, McKeown, and
Wiggins.
Members Absent: Councilmembers Campbell, Doyle, and Hulett.
Staff Present: Attorney Knutson, Clerk Upton, B. Beeker, B. Collins, K.
Godbey, S. Ilk, J. Pittis, B. Titus, and T. Smith.
Guests Present: Kiminori "Kimi" and Shinobu Saito, Thomas and Chieko
Suda, Temo "David" Tamaki, Matt Kuno, Aldra Hijikuro, and
Wayne Rush.
Public Present: J. Collins.
Meeting with Daishowa The purpose of the special meeting was for the City Council to meet with Kimmori Saito,
Dignitaries Chairman of Daishowa Paper Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Japan, as well as other dignitaries
from Daishowa.
Mayor Ostrowski opened the meeting by welcoming the Daishowa dignitaries to Port
Angeles and by expressing that the City' is looking forward to the move of Daishowa's
Seattle office to Port Angeles. The Mayor briefly described how City Councilmembers are
elected, after which the Councilmembers present introduced themselves. The Daishowa
representatives and City staff members were then introduced.
Mayor Ostrowski made reference to his recent trip to Japan and acknowledged Daishowa
for their gracious hospitality during the visit of the Port Angeles delegation. He then
introduced Public Works Director Pittis, who made a presentation on revitalization
activities taking place in the downtown area, both economically and culturally. Director
Pittis reviewed efforts specific to the Valley Creek Estuary, the Coastal Corridor project,
and the International Gateway project. He commended Daishowa for its many
contributions to the community, noting that the City is committed to the economic
development of the area and is feeling a sense of confidence that the area will withstand this
most recent economic downtown. The efforts and community spirit being demonstrated
are most encouraging.
Mayor Ostrowski delineated some of Daishowa's contributions to Port Angeles, such as a
contribution for Volunteer Field, assistance with the development of the Sail & Paddle
Park, expansion of the Port Angeles mill and establishment of the recycle center, donations
to the Waterfront Trail, and many, many others. Councilmember McKeown, as a member
of Soroptimist International, recognized Daishowa for their contributions, and she
expressed the City's gratitude for their partnership in this community.
Mr. Saito informed the Council that Daishowa has five guiding principles by which it
operates, all of which start with the letter "S". "Support" of the City is certainly in keeping
with those principles, and Mr. Saito stated it has been Daishowa's great pleasure.
Mayor Ostrowski then escorted the City's guests on a tour of City Hall before they departed
to Peninsula College.
