Officers pre,sent were: ~laiYor Smith, CouncilJnen Brown, Neer. Matthieu, "'1olfe and McFa4den, }fanager Vergeer, Attorney Severyns and Clerk Law. Pursuant to publications and statutes governing, hearing on the budget for the year 1956 was' opened. Mr. and Mrs. Mons Botnen appeared regarding the Peaboq,y- fill at Firth Street. Mr. u,rgeer advised' that appropriation is included in Street Department bt1dget to cover cost of culvert and fill, the same not to be paid by property assessments. The following budget changes were then recommended:. I Fire Department: Mechanic eliminated and one fireman added, total Il\lIllber of paid Fire Dep~nt personnel to be twelve, including three captains, $13.238.00, three firemen, $12.684.00, 4 firemen, $15,930.00, radio and fire alarm supplies. $1,600.00, truck operation, U,800.oo, Total fire budget $65,683.00 Fire Cumulative Reserve: Estimated receipts $1,590.00. Tax levy, $1,110.00 'providing Car tor Fire Chief at estimated cost~of $2700.00. Civil Defense, Current E>epense, General Administrative, from $2,500.00' to $500.00. Total ot General Administrative Maintenance ani Operation, ~$56,3oo.oo. Current ~ense Receipts, 'State Liquor Profits from $44,000.00 to $44,411+.00. Street Fund: Fifth Street culvert and~ ri&1t-of-way, $25,000.00. Total expeMitures, $143,915.00 Firemen's Pension Funl.: Typographical error, $15,000.00 to $14,000.00. Police Dep8.rtment;Curi-ent. E>epense'Fund: Erro~ in patrolmen's :salary, $350.20 to $357.40. City Matching, !J.E.a. from $3250.00 to $3100.00. Poli"e Uniforms from $1,050.00 to $1,200.00. . :ill~ Funi: . Janitor's 's~ from $927.00 to $1,854.00. Unappropriated Reserve from $172,474.38 to $171,547.38. .Total Light Budget, $1,119,180.00. It was mowed ty Councilman Brown'that the above changes be authorized and budget e,dppted as amended. Seconded by Councilman Matt.lIieu. Councilman M<:Fadden questioned advisability of reducing appropriation for Civil Defense and trying to operate the. same without co-ordinator. Mayor Smith advised of $3,000.00 blllance.in the Civil Defense Fund which in opin:i,on ,of the Board will be sufficient and necessitating curtailment of activities. Council discussed furnishing uniforms for the Police Matron and Desk Clerk in the Police Department. It was.. moved by Councilman McFadden that wishes of girls be granted and they not be reqUired to wear uniforms. The vote was.three to two opposed and motion did not carry. It was then moved by Councilman Matthieu, that ladies in the Police Department be furnished and wear uniforms. Seconded by Councilman rlolfe ani carried. It was understood that uniforms will not be required while ladies are serving probationary period, only-after permanently appointed. The question on budget approval ~Tas requested and a:ll members voted qe. Motion carried. Mr. Vergeer.informed that at conclusion of convention f~r City Managers he would like time extended another week, this being accumulated vacation. He also recommended that Council appoint H. E. Dodge acting City Manager dUring his msence. Council favored but took no action. Mr. Vergeer then reported on inspection of children's ha:ll which was found to be instructurally soUDd condition.
