HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-90 e , RESOLUTION NO. 1-90 A RESOLUTION of the City of Port Angeles relating to the destruction of firearms. WHEREAS, the proliferation of firearms in our ommunities has become increasingly dangerous to citizens and law enforcement officials alike; and WHEREAS, law enforcement evidence rooms are overflowing ith firearms judicially forfeited or forfeited due to failure o make a claim; and WHEREAS, under present state law, local law enforcement agencies which accumulate ten or more forfeited and unclaimed firearms legal to possess must be sold at auction every year; and WHEREAS, prior to 1988, courts and local law enforcement agencies had wider discretion to dispose of forfeited and unclaimed firearms; and WHEREAS, many local law enforcement agencies do not wish to place back into circulation forfeited firearms which could be used in the commission of a crime; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ANGELES, that the City of Port Angeles supports legislation that will allow local law enforcement agencies a local option to destroy forfeited or unclaimed firearms at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Dear Mayor Henriksen: I enclose a resolution for inclusion in Awe's 1990 legisla- tive package granting a local option to local law enforce- ment agencies to destroy forfeited and unclaimed firearms. This issue was raised before AWC's Legislative Committee at their September 15 meeting at'SeaTac. To date, support has been received by us or expressed to the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs by the following cities and police or sheriffs departments: The City of Bellevue The City of Everett The City of Yakima The City of Redmond King County Sedro Woolley Police Department Bremerton Police Department Bellingham Police Department Port Orchard Police Department Pierce County Sheriff Department The Governor I look forward to working with other cities and counties on this issue.
