The year-end deep freeze ha~ caused many secondary highway sub-grades to be frozen to a depth of 12 inches or even more, and that when warmer weather prevails, weight restrictions will be posted to prevent severe highway damage after the thaw. Interstate routes and other recently-constructed highways are normally not affected by the freeze-and-thaw cycle, but older two-lane highways are subject to "frost boils" and other deteriorating effects. Two different load restriction signs will be posted: E~~RGENCY, and SEVERE EMERGENCY. When posted, it will be illegal to drive overweight vehicles on the sections of roadway posted. Additional information on the signs contains details about size and type of tires and gross loads permitted on the segments posted. ,- The signs will be removed when the roadways have stabilized, heavy vehicles will be permitted to use the routes. and Most residents are fa~liliar with these load restrictions on the hi~hways from past years. We ur~e people to prepare a(;ain this year for weir;llt restrictions on state highways that normally require vehicles hauling heavy loads of boods and cOr.'J:lodities for delivery.
