RESOLUTION NO. 4-72
WHEREAS Victor Smith did stand on the shores of an unknown
harbor over 110 years ago and recognized one of the finest natural
sites for a city in our great land, and
WHEREAS the same Victor Smith did dream an impossible dream
and did envision a great city on this spot, and
WHEREAS the same Victor Smith did pursue his vision back and
forth across the United States several times when travel was most dif-
ficult and did promote in the Halls of Congress until an act creating
a townsite IIfor lighthouse, military and naval reserve, and other
pUblic purposesrl was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on June 19,
1862, and
WHEREAS the development of the military reserve resulted in
a well-planned city with wide straight streets, parks and other ameni-
ties, and
WHEREAS we, as current keepers of Victor Smith's dream of a
great city, must periodically rededicate ourselves to an ever-improving
living condition for all residents,
NOW THEREFORE, we do hereby proclaim June 19, 1972 as VICTOR
SMITH DAY and the week of June 18, 1972, as our 110th ANNIVERSARY WEEK,
and urge all citizens of our area to join us in this recognition of our
historical past.
PASSED~by the City Council of the City of Port Angeles and
approved by its Mayor at a regular meeting of the City Council on
the 16th day of May, 1972.
