A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Port Angeles,
Washington, seeking representation from Clallam
County on the Citizen's Advisory Commission for
the Northwest Straits National Marine Sanctuary.
WHEREAS, the City of Port Angeles is bordered along the north side by the Strait of
Juan de Fuca in the vicinity of the proposed Northwest Straits National Marine Sanctuary; and
WHEREAS, a significant percentage of the City's revenue depends on activities that
occur within the Strait of Juan de Fuca; and
WHEREAS, the City of Port Angeles has been hit hard by federal and state timber and
fishing restrictions, as well as the closure of its largest mill; and
WHEREAS, the Port Angeles City Council has expressed great concern with further
potential regulations and their possible negative impact on the City's economic well-being; and
WHEREAS, the Northwest Straits Citizen's Advisory Commission has been appointed
to further deliberate on (1) identifying key marine resources and values in the area as well as
the threats to them and (2) evaluating current and proposed protective measures and ways of
coordinating related federal, state, and local actions; and
WHEREAS, the current membership on the Northwest Straits Citizen's Advisory
Commission has no representation from Clallam County, Washington.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Port
Angeles as folloWs:
The City of Port Angeles strongly urges the appointment of representation from
Clallam County to the membership on the Northwest Straits Citizen's Advisory Commission.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Angeles at a regular meeting of said
