HomeMy WebLinkAbout24-95 RESOLUTION NO. 24-95 A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Port Angeles, Washington, supporting the campaign to keep the USS Missouri in the Kitsap/Olympic Peninsula region. WHEREAS, the USS Missouri is an historic maritime p having hosted the site of the Surrender by the Japanese to the Allied forces, September 2, 1945; WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has become an integral part of the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsula communities during its many years moored in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton; WHEREAS, thousands of Kitsap and Olympic Peninsula citizens either served aboard the USS Missouri or worked aboard the ship during maintenance and repair, in both wartime and peacetime; WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has become a major tourist attraction in our area and stands as a proud symbol of this area's role in the wOrld-wide peacekeeping efforts; WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has now been put on the inactive roles by the Department of Defense with the ultimate goal of relocating the ship from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to a community that will embrace its national historic value for its transformation into an historic museum; WHEREAS, the Bremerton City Council is exploring an extensive proposal to redevelop the Bremerton downtown waterfront, and the USS Missouri will serve as a strong economic and cultural accompaniment to this vision; WHEREAS, the Port Angeles City Council supports efforts that enrich the area's naval heritage and sense of cohesion, which is embodied by the USS Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Port Angeles City Council, in passing this resolution, supports the campaign to keep the USS Missouri in Bremerton. -1- PASSED by the City Council of the City of Port Angeles at regular meeting of said Council held on the l?th day of October , 1995.
