HomeMy WebLinkAbout49-92 RESOLUTION NO. 49-92 A RESOLUTION of the City of Port Angeles supporting the continuation of Criminal Justice Assistance Funding. WHEREAS, the Washington State Legislature recognized the need for addition funding support for local criminal justice agencies when they enacted the City/County Criminal Justice Assistance Act; and WHEREAS, the cities and towns have used the recently provided criminal justice assistance funds to improve the criminal justice system at the local level; and WHEREAS, the criminal justice system continues to be adversely impacted by crime, drugs, and gangs; and WHEREAS, all cities are not the same and urban cities have vastly different needs and resources than lesser populated cities and towns yet the citizenry expectations may be the same; and WHEREAS, many municipalities have exhausted their fiscal capacities and do not have adequate resources to meet the challenges of the increasing demand for criminal justice services; and WHEREAS, the provision of the additional criminal justice assistance funds sunset in 1993; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Port Angeles requests that the Legislature continue the criminal justice assistance funding, including the authority for all counties to impose a one-tenth of one percent increased sales tax for criminal justice purposes, including domestic violence community advocates who form a critical piece of effective coordinated response to this epidemic of violence in our cities, and urges the Legislature to remove the non-supplanting language from current law; and --1-- BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Port Angeles requests that the legislature enact legislation that gives cities and towns additional local option funding sources for criminal justice programs.
