Minutes of the regular meeting of the Port Angeles Planning Commission
January 7th, 1958.
Members present were M~cGee, Gort, Hankins, Hampton, Driscoll and Strange.
Also present was City Engineer Warder.
Because of the number of people present, meeting was held in the Council
Chamber.
First order of business was a discussion on improvements of 8th street
west from "eft to -"I" streets, and also preliminary discussion on feasibili tJ
of creating an LID for the area west of "In street from 5th to 8th streets.
City engineer Warder explained probable costs of an LID from data taken
from Cherry Hill Job. It appears the people are not interested in a
permanent LID job at this time, but wish the City to do something to imprOVE
8th street refered to above. Those present agreed to meet at a later date
to continue disaussion,'probably sometime after City elections.
A group present representing a petition fer improvement of 2nd street east
from Lincoln to Race were negt heard. Discussion centered mainly around
methods to finance the project, especially with reference to the inBtallatl~
of a culvert in Peabody Creek from 1st street to the south side of 2nd
street. Several suggestions were made and it was finally agreed by this
group, also to wait for further discussion at some future date.
Next order of business was a hearing on a petition from Dr. A. R. Galgano
for a variance from the zoning ordinance to allow the construction of a
medical clinic on lots 28-29-30, Perkins Sub!~vision of lot 32 which is
at the north east corner of Race and Georgianan streets. No one appeared
for or against the petition and after discussion, a motion was unanimously
passed recommending that the City Council approve of the variance.
NeEt order of business aas" the study of a reduced safety island in front
of the proposed motel at the corner of Front and Albert Streets. The
request being to reduce safety island from the normal requirement of
12 feet to 4 feet. This request is made in order to facilitate the off
street parking of cars using the motel and inasmuch as Albert Street
terminates I block north of this location, which obviously means practically
no foot traffic is involved, a motion was unanimously passed approving the
smaller safety island.
A general diSCUSSion was had regarding the hazardous traffic condition
at the intersection of "I" street hill and Marine Drive and it is recommenda
that a study be made to determine if improvements could be made of the
traffic control at that point.
The hazardous condition of traffic at the intersection of 8th and Cherry
streets was again discussed, especially with reference to large trucks
parked on the east side of Cherry and the south side of 8th, theeeby
obstructing the view of traffic flowing from cherry on to 8th street. It
is the recommendation of the ~1anning Co~ssion that the parking of trucks
for loading and unloading be prohibited on the south side of 8th street
for a distance of 50 feet east of cherry street.
The request of George Burns and associates for permission to install a
portable saw mill in the Uwens tsros. gravel pit at 14th and riM" streets was
next discussed and it was determined that due to the isolation in area, no
annoyance would arise rrom this installation and it is recommended that Mr.
Burns be grated a temporary revocable permit for a period of 3 or 4 months.
