Jeff Hedlund, 2417 West Sixteenth Street, addressed the Commission as the
owner/manager of Peninsula Scaling. The current operation is on Port property at the
Airport. The proposal is to establish the scaling operation on the Tumwater Truck Route at
Third Street. There is a scaling operation in the area at present and he asked that scaling
activities be interpreted as permitted uses in the IL, Industrial, Light Zone, as the activity is
similar to other permitted a<;tivities allowed in the zone. He described the activities of a log
scaling activity for the eommission's information and answered questions from the
Commissioners regarding the current operation and its location.
Following discussion between staff and the Commission, the Commission concurred that a
log scaling activity would be considered a permitted use in the n., Industrial Light Zone, as
it would be likened to a freight terminal, which is a permitted use in the n. at present..
PLANNING STUDIES
Discussion on rezone hearings for compliance with the Comprehensive Plan
Land Use Map designations.
The Commission opened discussion on the task of setting neighborhood meetings and
scheduling a public hearing(s) to complete the task of review for the purpose of rezone of
properties for consistency with the adopted Comprehensive Plan Land Use Map. The
Commission decided to schedule neighborhood meetings on May 31, June 21, July 26,
August 23, and a public hearing on September 27, 1995. The mechanics of the meetings will
be discussed during a meeting of three Commissioners with the Planning Director on May 3,
1995,4 pm.
STAFF REPORTS
David Sawyer stated that Planning Director Collins has been unable to return to work due to
his mothers hospitalization following the death of his father, but is expected to return to the
City within a week.
REPORTS OF COMMISSION MEMBERS
Commissioner Philpott once again noted that the State of Washington's repair of the many
potholes in the south lanes of First Street between Golf Course Road west to about Albert
Streets does not reflect well on the City and is becoming a traffic hazard as motorists swerve
to avoid hitting them.
Chair Nutter provided directions to Commissioners attending the Association of Washington
Cities satellite conference on "Municipal Disputes" to be held at the Peninsula Community
College on April 27, 1995. Three commissioners will be attending the conference. Chair
Nutter also expressed thanks to Vice Chair Gennan for his handling of the previous meeting
in her absence and to stafffor the extra help they have provided in the absence of Director
Collins in setting up the neighborhood meetings the Commission set in response to public
request during a meeting in the fall of 1994.
