Minutes of the special meeting of the City of Port Angeles Planning
Commission, May 7, 1951.
A special meeting of the Planning Commission was held on May 7, 1951
to discuss the advisability of holding another bond election for the
purpose of improving certain arterial streets.
Those present were, Mayor Feeley, Commissioners Taylor and Robinson,
Planning Commis~ion members Strange, Smith, Lamoureux, Reiners,'
Stewart and Gort, City engineer Ahlvers,City Attorney Trumbull,
Ed Shields and Roy Chapman.
The original paving plan was reviewed and in addition, the problem
of re-routing the logging trucks from the present streets to West
Fifth Street down Tumwater. Also, flaring the bottom of the Tumwater
Bridge to permit the trucks to make shorter right and left turns at
this point. Also discussed was the financing of the paving project.
Mr. Shields suggested that---In addition to the original paving program
as proposed last year, the following addition was proposed: The
improving of Marine Drive from the boat haven to Crown Zellerbach.
This street to be widened and rebuilt.
Suggested the Planning Connnission meet again next Monday night at
7:00 P.M., May l4th, 1951 to reyiew the above program with the City
Commission and other interested persons as to including Marine Drive
or Third Street extension and financing same.
A general discussion followed on various means of finance. Mr. Taylor
reported he had been informed, when visiting the Department of
Municiple Corporations at Olympia, that it was possible the total
amount of bond issue moneys could be six and one-half per cent of the
assessed valuation, rather than the usual five per cent that had
been under consideration.
Mr. Trumbull and Mr. Strange were asked to look further into this
matter and report at the next meeting.
Mr. Taylor reminded the Planning Commission of the plans and
specifications of the new city jail and suggested they study the
plans and make recommendations as to whether to go ahead with the
project at this time.
No further business appearing, the meeting was adjourned.
