Minutes of the regular meeting of the Port Angels Planning Commission
May l6th, 1961.
Members pr~sent were Hunt, Anderson, McGee, Driscoll, Hankins and Strange.
Also present was John Warder, City Engineer.
Minutes of the last meetins were read and approved.
First order of business was hearing on application of Woodlawn Investment
Co. for variance from zoning ordinance to permit installation of mobile
homes in Grandview Heights subdivision, being South 1/2 of surburban
Lot-77, Townsite. Chairman read letter from Mr. H. E. Dodge, Building
Inspector, advising he had pmsted the property on April 25th, 1961 according~
to the zoning ordinance. No one appeared at the hearing either for or
against the application and after discussion which brought out the
evidence of need for such an area, a motion was unanimously passed
recommending to the City Council the approval of the application, subject
to the regulations of the State Board of Health, part l7, Book 5 governing
sanitation on mobile homes.
Chairman next declared hearing open on application of Clallam Count for
a variance from zonin ordinance on Lots 8,9, and 10, Block Townsite,
being the corner of 1 th and D Streets, for permission to build a metal
storage silled for the protection of County Road equipment at the County
Barn site. Chairman read letter from Mr. H. E. Dodge, advising he had
posted the property according to the zoning ordinance on April 28th, 1961.
No one appeared at the hearing and after general discussion relating to
the fact this was an unzoned area and generally used for the above purpose,
a motion was unanimously passed recolnmending to the City Council the
application be approved.
Mrs. Violet Hurlong, being present, next appeared before the Commission to
explain her application for the vacation of the alley between 3rd and 4th,
Peabody and Vine Streets and Vine Street from the alley 3rd to alley 4th
and 5th, property gener~lly known as Peabody Gulch. ~~s. Hurlong explained
she wished to beautify the area by making some channel changes in Peabody
Creek, installation of foot bridges, water wheels, planting of shrubs etc.
Mrs. Hurlong advised she had landscape sketches of the work intended and
inasmuch as she did not have them present, agreed to bring them to our next
regular meeting.
Mr. M. G. Poole, Planning Consultant retained by the Clallam County Commiss-
ioners to explore the advisability of making a planning survey of the
County which includes Port Angeles, was present to explain the economic
advantages to the City and County of such a plan. N~. Poole explained the
suggested financing of the project would be by the various municipal
agencies together with the Federal Government. Mr. Poole expressed a desire
to meet with the members of the City Council and the Planning Commission
jointly at which time he would go into detail on the plan and expresly
explain the advantages to the C1ty. The chairman advised Mr. Poole he would
ascertain if such a meeting could be arranged and so advise him.
