Minutes of the regu~r meeting of the Port Angeles Planning Commission
June 20th, 1961.
Members present were McGee, Reiners, Driscoll, Anderson & Strange.
Also present was City Engineer John Warder.
First order of business was further consideration of the application
of Mrs. Violet Hurlong for the vacation of alley 3 & 4, Peabody & Vine
Streets. Also certain portions of Vine Street alley 3 & 4 to Alley 4-5.
Mrs Hurlong being present submitted preliminary sketches showing proposed
use of area for landscaping etc. in conjunction with contemplated
construction of a motel at 4th and Peabody Streets. After questioning
Mrs. Hurlong on her proposed improvements she was advised commission
would take action later on in the meeting. In a subsequent discussion
of the problem, the Commission felt it would not be necessary to recommend
the approval of the application at this time, inasmuch as the vacated
area involved does not seem to have a major effect area wise on the
proposed improvement. It was therefor unanimously passed that the
application be indefinitely tabled.

Next order of business was consideration of a request by Mr. Ed.N.
Fitzgerald, in a letter addressed to the City Council, for a variance
from the zoning ordinance which would permit the construction of a
twenty to twenty-five unit apartment house at the southeast corner of
Park Avenue and Laurel Street. A first class residential area. Mr.
Fitzgerald and Mr. Arnold Leby were present and offered explanation of
the proposed construction, stating that in their judgment the proposed
structure would be a credit to the area and would advance rather than
retard values. After a lengthy discussion, Mr. Fitzgerald ~greed to have
a preliminary sketch drawn showing the proposed appearance of the
structure in order that the Commission would have a better idea of the
problem. The matter was then tabled for further consideration.
An artists aketch of the one time proposal by Mr. Joe Hoare for the
cutting thru of Laurel Street from First Street to the Alley 2 & 3 was
received, noted and ordered filed.
A general discussion on proposed street improvements follm'led. Mr.
~arder informed the Commission he had directed the disposal of
excavation material on LID #180 to be deposited at Front and White Creek
crossing which will make the fill over White Creek which the Commission
had recommended to accomplish an East end approach to the City.
