Minutes of the regular meeting of the Port Angeles Planning Commission
October 2nd, 1956.
.
Members present were Reiners, McGee, Hankins, Driscoll, Gort and Strange.
Also present was City Engineer Ahlvers.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
First order of business was the consideration of a variance request by the
Vannausdle's Furniture and Hardware Co. on Lots 17-18, Block 286, located
at 10th and Eunice Streets. ~he application requested permission to build
an addition to the present building which would give the owner approximately
2,000 square feet additional floor area. No one appeared with objections
to the request and Mr. Vannausdle spoke in explanation of their requirements
for additional space and in addition, the general improvement in appearance
to the property after the additions are completed and while this is in a
first class residential area, it is recognized by the members of the Commissia
that the business has long been established at this location and it appearing
that the additions planned by the firm would enhance the appearance of the
property, it was unanimously passed that the Planning Commission recommend
to the- City Council that the application be granted.

AlSO present at our meeting was Mr. Arnold Harma of 1227 East 3rd street
which is in the Sunrise Heights area, with a request for permiSSion to build
a car port adjacent to his residence with the outside walls of the car port
being within one foot of the property line. His contention being it would
be permissable for him to build a fence on the ppoperty line which would be
far more unsightly and obstructive to view than his proposal of a panneled
wall on a car port. After considerable discussion, it was suggested to Mr.
Harms that he make an application for a ~ariance from the zoning ordinance.
If this is done, the matter will be considered at some future date.
A letter from Dr. E. B. Miller was read suggesting the Planning COmmBsion
consider the vacation of a small portion of "Hn Street near Marine Drive
allowing him to excavate and pave around the "Villa Cafe" for car parking.
During the discussion, it was pointed out that this ares is in direct line
with the proposed intercepter sewer line and that it was not deemed advis-
able to consider the matter at this time. A committee consisting of Messrs.
Reiners and Gort was appointed to meet with Dr. Miller and advise him of the
situation in that area.
Following a general discussion of various matters, meeting adjourned at
9:00 P.M.
Respectfully submiteed,
T~)
