Minutes of the regular meeting of the Port Angeles Planning Commission,
December 1, 1959.
.
Members present were Anderson, Driscoll, Hunt, McGee and Strange. Chairman
read a communication from Mr. J. E. Law, City Clerk advising of the appoint-
ment of two new members to the Planning Commission. New members are Mr.
Rennie Anderson and Mr. Harry Hunt. Also the reappointment of Fred C. Strange
Herbert McGee and John M. Reiners. The terms of all of the above named are
from November 5th, 1959 to November 5th, 1965.
The first item of business under consideration was an application of the
Assembly of God Church located at 8th and Pine Streets for the vacation of
the alley between eth and 9th East of Pine Street for a distance of lOO feet
to allow them the necessary area for their planned church buil~~ng project
expansion. A representative of the church was present and explained the
necessity for the area required. After considerable discussion, it was
agreed that the matter be layed on the table until the next meeting to give
all members opportunity to inspect the area.
Next item of business was the consideration of a petition from property
owners adjacent to Alder Street asking for the vacation of Alder Street
from the southerly margin of 2nd street to the northerly margin of the alley
between 4th and 5th streets. Present at the meeting and speaking for the
petition were Mr. William Thompson and attorney G. B. Chamberlain. A
gneral discussion followed on this matter.and it was brought out that a
similar petition to this one had been before the Plann~g Commission some
years past at which time it had been denied. It,was deemed advisable to lay
the matter on the table for this meeting in order to give the new members
of the Planning Commission opportuhity to familiarize themselves with the
area.

Next item of business was the reading of a communication refered to us by the
Council from the Downtown Parking Association, Inc. concerning off-street
parking and suggesting that the City take steps to alleviate what is claimed
to be a parking problem that has long since reached the saturation point.
In their communication, they suggest that the City have a survey made in
conjunction with the State of Washington and the Federal Government. The
object of which would be to get some expert advice on the method for
relieving our problem. The matter was discussed at some ~ength and it was
regularly moved and passed that the Chairman be authorized to get in touch
with the planning division of the State of Washington and ascertain the
nezessary procedure to be followed and also the estimated cost of same.
It was regularly moved and passed that the Chairman address letters to the
two former members of our Planning Commission, namely Mrs. Haidee Hampton
and John Gort thanking them for their services to our board over the past
several years.
