The Gateway Project will: ,~' coordinate transportation corridors and pathways to provide better coordination between multiple modes of transportation near the ferry terminal and throughout the CBD. ~ help address deterioration of sidewalks in the immediate vicinity of the project site. ~ reduce traffic safety conflicts between pedestrians and motorists, buses and ferry traffic. ~' provide for permanent site location for Clallam Transit's main transfer area. ~ provide for dedicated park-n-ride facilities which are lacking in the downtown area. ~ help develop improved transportation and visitor orientation signage and signalization. ~' coordinate traffic signals tied to ferry loading/unloading ~ help provide and manage ferry and shopper parking during the peak tourist season. The Port Angeles Gateway Project can also serve as a catalyst and anchor for further downtown revitalization, and can help enhance and provide additional capacity to accommodate regional tourism. The Gateway project can: ~ reduce "leakage" of local retail and commercial business. ~' help provide additional capacity to manage increasing pedestrian, automotive and parking demands as new downtown development and redevelopment occurs. ~ provide an identifying feature(s) or focus that represents an image of the community. ~ enhance marketability and competitiveness in terms of downtown business retention, expansion and recruitment. ~' encourage additional private and public/private development and redevelopment in the CBD. ~ improve downtown land use by redeveloping some existing parking to below grade locations over which additional public and/or private uses can occur, "at grade" and potentially "above grade" (IE: air space development).
