August 5, 2009 The Reasons 5ehind The Feiro Marine Lite Center At t1rst glance the Feiro Marine Lite Center looks like a lot ot tanks tull of water in an aCjuarium setting. But there are three tanks that sa.:J "touch" on them so .:Jou walk over to them and ~ngerl.:J stick in one t1nger to t1nd out what those prickl.:J things teellike - "oh the.:J're reall.:J soft," or "wh.:J is that shell moving so tast?" or "Is there an.:Jthing in there that will hurt me?" or "It hugged m.:J t1ngerwith it's long stitt spines," or "Mom, come here and see this! I learned about it when m.:J class came here," or "Put .:Jour t1nger close to that red Rutt.:J thing on that tube and watch it pop back in the tube." All ot us volunteers love these comments and the interest and curiosit.:J the.:J reveal about the above-described sunRower sea stars, hermit crabs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and tube worms to name just a tew ot the man.:J live specimens in the Center. Ever.:J da.:J something is happening with the invertebrates (animals without a backbone) and fish trom microscopic to the large octopus in the man.:J assorted t.:Jpes ot tanks. For instance, last sunda.:J we were all Fascinated when the rainbow sea star started spewing out white strands ot sperm. Then another star ot the same species started lettinggo ot biggobs ot reddish eggs. 5urt Foot, an emplo.:Jee/volunteer, Cjuickl.:J got samples ot each onto glass slides to examine under a microscope that can be observed on a large monitor. Several people spent the rest ot the afternoon caught b.:J o the drama ot the hundreds (or thousands) ot minute sperm tr.:Jing to attach to an egg. After that happened with several eggs, the perimeter ot the egg started thickening. 5etore we left, one ot the eggs was alread.:J starting to divide and start a new lite. 5urt is also an expert at photographing tin,y creatures through the microscope so the resulting pictures can more easil,y be shown to all the guests. Man,y groups of students come to learn about what the,y might see in tidepools (marine bioloW) , and what is invisible to the naked e,ye in the ocean around us. No matter what their age, ever, yone leaves with a new knowledge of our world; the feeling of how awesome it is and how we can be more active in taking care of it. About 1200 grade and middle school students were in the program this spring, and now in the fall of 2009 classes will also be starting up again instead of waiting for next spring. 50b Campbell, the director and man of all trades, leads these classes but also keeps the marine lab running smoothl,y. His man,y jobs include maintaining the pump out on the dock that brings in the sea water that is the right temperature and salinit,y to keep all the plants and animals alive. The,y need the right amount of ox,ygen and other elements in their world and 50b has been known to work 12 hours a da,y to provide that. often the open pipes have to be reamed out because of the creatures that have decided to just live in them, instead of heading on in to an aquarium tank -like the sponges and algae and tunicates. If no one else is there to keep the Feiro Center going, 50b can alwa,ys be counted on to be there to open the doors and welcome visitors of either marine animal or human kinds. He is the teacher of all the rest of us whenever there is a question and trul,y cares for this most m,ysterious of all our environment - the ocean.
