To Whom It May Concern:
Port Angeles Graving Yard and Indian Burial Ground
No matter how much we would wish to go back to the day before this important project began,
with ail parties signing and pledging good faith in the contract, WE CANNOT. It is necessay
now to remember, WE ARE ALL IN THIS BOAT TOGETHER, so we must work together to
solve it. Any solution requires a lot of money. We must seek continuation of the graving
operation where it is because there is no guarantee with a move to another site, only a new set of
problems with the bridge condition worsening daily. Time is of the essence.
It appears to me the only reasonable solution is to move the recovery phase to the Elwha
Reservation, and build a museum for the exhumed artifacts, together with a sealed buriai vault to
hold the human remains. There should be enough acreage to accept the soil removed for the
painstaking screening process to proceed without interference. Any final settlement must provide
for the Eunis Creek camping area as well in case more remains are found in future projects there.
The tribe has aiways wanted a casino and it could be added to the Elwha village to make them
financially independent.
If this contracted state project of building the bridge pontoons is scuttled here, it will set an
unthinkable precedent of placing all waterfront property in the United States in jeopardy in the
future. That, combined with ail the restrictions placed by the Enviroumental Protection Act,
Growth Management Act, Shorelines Management Act, Endangered Species Act, etc. will doom
our economic future forever.
We can exhibit compassion for the past and our native friends and proceed with the Graving
Yard where it is if we keep our cool and work together.
