RECYCLED PAPER
The Honorable Dan Di Guilio
Mayor of Port Angeles
321 East Fifth Street
.Port Angeles, WA 98362
Dear Mayor Di Guilio:
Let me take this opportunity to send my congratulations to the City of Port Angeles on
receiving a Civic Historic District designation. The National Register, by which this designation
was made possible, was authorized by the National Historic preservation Act of 1966. It
established a partnership between federal, state and local governments liar a national historical
program that allowed for a wide variety of properties reflecting the broad diversity found among
local communities and states to receive special recognition. The designation of the Port Angeles
Civic Historic District acknowledges that your community has successful identified such an area.
This success would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment by your
city's staff, elected officials, citizens and interested organizations.
Historic sites and areas are physical manifestations of the people, ideas, and successes
that have contributed over the years to the shaping of a community. I have seen positive results
when a community recognizes and preserves these structures and districts. The Port- Angeles
Historic Civic District is a well-deserved source of pride for local residents. But it can also
provide an opportunity for economic growth as businesses see the value of locating in or near the
district.
When I was asked to help find funding opportunities for converting the old fire hall into a
new veteran's center, it was determined that the first step was for the building to be designated as
a historic site. I am pleased that this step has been taken. I look forward to seeing the Port
Angeles Civic Historic District becoming a vibrant and highly used anchor for the community.
With best wishes for the future,
Sincerely,
NORM DICKS
Member of Congress
