Greetings,
Winter Wildlands Alliance (VVWA) is a national advocacy organization representing the
interests of human-powered winter recreationists across the U.S. We represent over 24,000
members of 38 groups in 12 states, including hundreds in Washington State. WWA is the
voice for 18 million human-powered winter recreationists across the country.
Winter Wildlands Alliance would like to convey its support for daily winter road clearing on
Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. Hurricane Ridge represents an important
resource for nonmotorized winter recreationalists, providing a wide variety of experiences
with minimal environmental impacts. The Park Service's current winter policy of keeping
the road open only three days a week is not adequate and does not address the demand for
recreation in the area.
Increased access to Hurricane Ridge would support the local economy as well. With its
gorgeous views and ample recreational opportunities, Hurricane Ridge provides a draw for
tourists in the winter off-season. The convenience of Hurricane Ridge to local communities
improves the quality of life for residents, attracting businesses to and keeping businesses in
the area.
We understand that external organizations or local governments may be able assist with
winter road clearing. If the National Park Service is unable to provide plowing and other
services needed to maintain the road for winter use, it should look to these other groups.
Winter Wildlands Alliance would like to see the National Park Service make Hurricane Ridge
more accessible to local users and visitors alike. The ridge is an important national resource
in a season and region where such easily accessible recreational opportunities can be hard to
come by. Expanding plowing to every day of the week would make this national resource
available to more of the people who love it most.
Sincerely,
Whitney Rearick
