Is the addition of fluoride to water systems harmful, beneficial, or both?
My project is about fluoridated water and if there are more positives or more negatives of
having fluoride in water systems.I wanted to research this topic because my town of Port
Angeles Washington has fluoridated water. Here is what I found.
Pro's of fluoridated water: There are a lot of benefit's of having fluoridated water.
Fluoride in our water has shown to strengthen our teeth, prevent cavities, disease, rot, and
it also whitens our teeth.Dentist Dr. Siemens D.D.S. of Port Angeles stated that thirty to
fifty percent of tooth decay is reduced in children and adolescents and twenty-seven
percent of cavities in adults because of fluoride in water systems.
Con's of fluoridated water: Some negatives of having fluoridated water systems are
fluorosis, disease, bone weakening, and worst case scenario but very rare is cancer.
Fluorosis is caused when either children or the elderly are exposed to too much fluoride
and there teeth become spotted. To much consumption of fluoride can has also shown to
cause weakening of the bones. A Port Angeles resident named Ron Browning claimed
that the fluoridated water was causing him health problems. His kidney disease was
worsened when he started drinking the water and a rash appeared on his legs. When he
stopped drinking from the tap the rash went away and his disease got better.
This is not all of the information I have found on fluoridated water, this is just the main
points of the nine page paper I did. From my research I have found that there is no clear
answer to my question but that the answer is more of a personal opinion. From my
findings.I have come to my own conclusion that the risks of having fluoride in the water
far outweigh the positives. Yes, fluoride in water systems can help protect our teeth, and
yes, studies have shown that fluoridated communities have had positive results of fluoride
in water. On the other hand there are the Communities who have had negative results.
People claiming to have worsened diseases and health problems and several reported
cases of the tooth disease Fluorosis. I hope this information has helped you in some way
or another and effected your look at fluoride in either a positive or negative way.
