VOLUNTEER SHORTAGE
The shortage of volunteers is being felt throughout the community as many groups
struggle with a smaller number to meet their needs and we, at the Chamber Visitor's
Center, are one of these. This is due to aging of our volunteers and the inability to find
people willing to volunteer on a regular schedule.
I have been a volunteer at the Visitor's Center for over ten years and find it a delightful,
challenging place to work. I meet people from all over the world as well as direct them to
local motels, restaurants, museums, and encourage them to just walk the town and enjoy
themselves.
I would like to invite the writer to the PDN, who was very critical of the Visitor's Center,
to come down and be a volunteer and get acquainted with our work. She was upset that
we were not open for every arrival of the COHO. She would see that this means giving
up several hours during her dinner time, especially weekends, on a regular schedule.
During the peak summer season it means being open at 10 p.m., after the late arrival of the
COHO, in an area of town that is not always safe with many transients gathering around
the Gateway area. A volunteer willing to accept this responsibility might be found on the
Endangered Species list.
The volunteers are a dedicated, hard working group, doing the best they can to assist
grateful travelers and promote Port Angeles.
