RE: Support for the Jamestown S'Klallarn Tribe's Bike Friendly Community Application
Dear Mr. Clarke:
The City of Port Angeles hereby offers its full support for the Jamestown S'Klallarn Tribe's application to
your Bike Friendly Community program for the spring of 2015. As a sovereign nation, the Tribe actively
contributes to the well being of the greater Clallam County community. Specifically, they have long been
advocates of the Olympic Discovery Trail and supportive of bicycling in general. 'There are three sections
of the Olympic Discovery Trail in eastern Clallam County oil Tribal land. Each of these Trail sections is
unique and allows for a wonderful cycling experience. The Tribe's Trail sections fit seamlessly into the
overall distance of the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT).
The Tribe recognizes the benefits of the ODT to the Tribal community as well as to Clallam County and its
cities and towns in terms of economic development, recreation, and tourism. They remain open to inviting
visitors to Tribal lands. A half mile section of the ODT currently passes through a very popular public park
owned and operated by the Tribe and another half mile section is adjacent to the Tribe's governmental
campus in B1yn. The Tribe has worked diligently with Clallam County to ensure that Trail user amenities
are available along the route within Tribal lands. Two restroom facilities are open to the public and are well
used by cyclists along with bike racks, water resources, picnic tables, and Trail head parking.
Soon, a fourth section of Trail will be completed on Tribal land. Tribal staff was successful in obtaining
grant funding for construction of a .7 mile section of Trail near the eastern County line. The Trail will be
constructed on Tribal land using Tribal construction crews managed by"Tribal staff. The Trail design work
is funded from the Tribal transportation budget. This project is a fine example of the Jamestown S'Klallam
Tribe's dedication to the'Trail as a world class cycling route.
Both Port Townsend and Sequirn have already received Bike Friendly designations and Port Angeles and
Clallam County are in the process of applying for the designation. The Jamestown S'Klallarn Tribe, located
between Sequim/Port Angeles and Port Townsend, will further the bicycling connection between Clallam
and Jefferson counties.
In support of this Bike Friendly Community application,
