Jim,
The beam sized for the enlarged garage door header can be as small as a 3'/2" x 9" gluelam rather than the 3 1/2" x 12"
shown in the calculations.
The contractor originally thought that he would need a 3 %2" x 12" to fill the void but once it was opened up they do not
need this large of a beam.
The top of the gluelam beam may be ripped down to create the proper depth of beam needed provided it is a minimum of
9" deep since the top of the beam is in compression.
