A sign of a good leader is being able to guide yourself and others through both good and challenging
times, demonstrating high standards of responsibility, and showing commitment to community. Tell a
story about a significant community responsibility you assumed or were given. How did this experience
help you grow as a leader? How did the project impact others? What did you gain?
During my junior year with NJROTC I was granted the opportunity to be a platoon
commander. This was my first official leadership role, which was both terrifying and exciting all
at the same time. In our unit we have a weekend -long program called Basic Leadership Training
which is offered to all the cadets to take part in learning leadership skills. Approximately 80
cadets took part, and they broke us up into individual units. I oversaw ten freshman cadets in my
platoon which made up the entirety of my platoon. This meant that they were new to this
weekend and had only two months' experience with the NJROTC program. The other units had a
mix of returning, experienced cadets with freshman cadets, which gives them a major advantage
in the competitions. The units work as a team in various activities and team -building exercises
while competing against each other to see which unit is the finest.
My unit worked hard together, and I encouraged them to do their best. I noticed, while
overseeing them, that the cadets respond better when the leader listens to them and shows
interest in their thoughts, so during our "det time" I would ask for their ideas and show interest in
them. Following that, I learned that they train better if the leader shows emotion too. Unlike the
other leaders I didn't just bark orders and act stoic and cold which was preserved as rude, blunt,
and uncaring by their own cadets. I showed positive emotion motivation, and fairness such as
smiling and telling a occasional joke and really focusing on my tone of voice to ensure I sounded
confident and serious, but not sharp and rude, which gave them a more human leader, a type of
leader they could more relate to. Likewise, we studied techniques in saluting, marching, and
independent self-improvement such as confidence in sharing ideas. During the weekend my
platoon improved majorly, we came third in tug of war, first in inspection and the drill down
competitions, and by the end we earned second place in the best platoon at BLT award- What's
more I was congratulated by our Navel Science Instructor and said how impressed he was of my
capability to turn my platoon into such a powerful family in such a short amount of time.
I found that this made me want to continue to strive in being a great leader. I discovered
that I enjoyed working with the freshman cadets and teaching them what they needed to know. I
enjoyed that I could encourage them and support them in achieving their full potential. I found
that I could motivate people and help them achieve their goals. I have continued to push forward
learning all I can to be a leader and to help others by becoming the Executive Officer of the
NJROTC Company, and by always asking for advice by not only the higher up chain of
command but by my own people. I have taken on more leadership roles and have been
involved in additional leadership learning opportunities in and out of NJROTC. I have attended
Leadership Conferences with other officers in NJROTC. I have been given opportunities to teach
the other cadets in class and have been given team captain for the air rifle team. Outside of
NJROTC I have been participating in Clallam County Fire Explorer unit. This has given me
opportunities to interact with other adult leaders in a different area. I have been able to support
the other explorers and we have been able to work as a team during our exercise. I find myself
encouraging the other explorers and supporting them as 1, myself, is learning and asking our
instructions about leadership skills and communication techniques.
The experience as the platoon leader for BLT gave me an opportunity to be a leader but it
also helped me build relationships with new incoming cadets. The ten cadets that was in my unit
left that weekend knowing that they could come to me any time throughout the year and I would
support them. They were able to take what they learned and continue to use those skills
throughout the year. I continued to support them and teach them as opportunities presented
themselves. A few of the cadets came to me personally and thanked me for helping them through
the weekend. They stated that they were anxious and that I made the weekend be less scary and
more educational and fun.
