HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/17/2019 Minutes PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD Port Angeles Fire Department Port Angeles, Washington April 17, 2019 CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Barnard called the regular meeting of the Public Safety Advisory Board to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: Alan Barnard, Evan Brown, Nolan Duce, Kathleen Graf, Pamela Lindquist,Thomas Mitchell, Lourene O'Brien, Kiara Schmitt, Shana Scott, Teresa Sesma-Meyers, Dr. Ed Zoble Members Absent: Mark Bowes Staff Present: Brian Smith, Police Chief; Mike Sanders, Assistant Fire Chief; Catherine Dewey, Secretary APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: It was moved by Lourene and seconded by Pamela to approve the March meeting minutes. Motion passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: Alan opened the meeting by thanking Kiara for bringing treats for the group. Port Angeles Police Department Report: Chief Smith provided a handout on the City of Lake Forest Park Photo Enforcement Program as a model for the program that City Council will be presenting. He has provided information so that the Board can be informed and have an opinion either way and has asked that members take the time to educate themselves on the proposal. Chief has invited the Board to come to the Council meeting to share their thoughts/opinions on the proposal and will provide the date of that meeting when it is available. He believes that the greatest resistance is that technology will be doing a job that a Police officer should be doing. Chiefs proposal is to add some resources in order to make this happen such as filling a FT position that has been vacant specifically for this. Nolan requested a breakdown of the cost of putting in the cameras as well as what revenue the City would expect to collect from the cameras. Chief also noted that this will be a Council Program not a PD program. Chief also shared that the Police Department participated in a training exercise with the COHO and the Coast Guard base out on the water, Chief would like to invite Corporal Dombrowski to a meeting to discuss what the exercise entailed. The Police Department is working on ways make the COHO safer.
