HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/17/2018 Minutes PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD City Council Chambers Port Angeles, Washington October 17, 2018 CALL TO ORDER: Vice-Chairman O'Brien called the regular meeting of the Public Safety Advisory Board to order at 6:05 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: Mark Bowes, Nolan Duce, Kathleen Graf, Pamela Lindquist , Lourene O'Brien, Kiara Schmitt, Shana Scott , Ed Zoble Members Absent: Alan Barnard Staff Present: Brian Smith, Police Chief; Mike Sanders, Assistant Fire Chief; Catherine Dewey, Secretary APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: It was moved by Graf and seconded by Scott to approve the September meeting minutes. Motion passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: Alan Barnard requested that Lourene O'Brien ask the members is they would like to meet again in November or wait until January. It was moved by Nolan and seconded by Bowes to meet again in January for the next scheduled Public Safety Advisory Board Meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Port Angeles Police Department Report: Chief Smith announced that the PD had relaunched the rediscovery program and that Amy Miller from VEMO has been hired on to assist. Miller's time will be split between on the street activities and following up with patients. Chief Smith also noted that there was Opioid Summit today that Chief Dubuc was attending. The new Police Explorer post is being well received and is taking off, two meetings have already taken place and kids seem to be very interested. Chief Smith also mentioned that two Officers were being deployed. The 2019 budget has been submitted. Port Angeles Fire Department Report: Assistant Chief Sanders announced that the Community Paramedic Program was gaining momentum, the Chief is working closely with the Union to create a position that would cover these calls and responsibilities. Chief also noted that Lieutenant Denton had accepted a position with OMC and would be leaving the Department. New hire Tyler Wildeman starts the Fire Academy in January and will return to shift fulltime in April of 2019. GOOD OF THE ORDER: Lindquist—noted that the outreach with the Rediscovery program was great and that the PD and Amy were doing great. Schmitt— noted that RJOTC riffle buffers were falling off and not of the best quality, she asked the members for any suggestions. Conversation ensued. Ideas included paining the tips of the riffles orange or using an orange duck tape. Bowes—noted that he believed Tom Mitchel (applicant) would be a great addition to the Board. Zoble— noted that the college should consider a training program for prospective dispatchers as this job is in demand in this community but with a high turnover. Scott— noted that the new Explorer programs were going great and that she'd love to see a FD post ADJOURNMENT: Chairman Barnard adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m. The next meeting is Wednesday,January 16, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
