In accordance with your request and authorization, Krazan Associates has completed a limited scope survey o
reinforcing steel in the existing perimeter concrete foundation for the referenced 30 ft. by 30 ft. detached garage.
The survey was conducted March 9 2009 using a James Instruments Rebar Plus' Pachometer serial number
9201012.
The pachometer provides information to the operator through the transmission of a continuous electromagnetic
signal generated via a hand -held wand as the wand is moved across the surface of the concrete being surveyed.
Interpretation of the signal strength on an analog R -meter and an audible signal provide the operator with the
information required to locate and identify embedded steel objects. Relative signal strength provides the operator
with an indication of the position of and the apparent depth of concrete cover over the reinforcing. The Rebar
Plus model pachometer is effective to a depth of 5 to 6 inches.
The dimensions of the spread footing were verified by excavating alongside and underneath the footings along
the West and South sides of the structure To observe the typical reinforcing steel patterns, pachometer scans
were performed underneath and along the exposed footing locations and along the stem walls.
The foundation system consists of a continuous reinforced concrete spread footing with a reinforced concrete
stem wall, configured as follows.
Typical footing dimensions appear to be 16 inches wide by a minimum of 10 inches thick.
The stem wall measures 6 inches wide by 20 inches high.
The stem wall is generally centered on the continuous footing, with 3 to 6 inches of footing concrete
exposed in front of the stem wall.
Concrete surface finish is relatively dense and appears to have been well consolidated during placement.

Rebar Survey
The following indications of reinforcing steel were observed during the course of the survey
Stem Wall.
One continuous horizontal top bar positioned near the center of the stem wall.
o The top bar appears to be positioned from 2 and 6 inches below the top of the wall
Typical vertical bar spacing is 48 inches on center at all wall locations.
o Vertical bars were also observed at wall ends and corners.
o Vertical bars appear to have a horizontal hook embedded near the bottom of the spread footing.
inch diameter sill anchor bolts appear to be embedded a minimum of 7 inches into the top of the stem
wall.
Rebar size appears to be minimum #4 bar based on pachometer signal strength and indicated cover

Two continuous horizontal bars were detected in the continuous spread footing.
o Rebar appears to have a minimum of 3 inches of cover to the bottom and 4 inches to the outside
formed faces of the footing

Based on the above observations, the stem walls and continuous footing dimensions and reinforcing steel details
found in the subject structure generally conform to the requirements noted on the untitled "FDN PLAN"
provided. Additionally the dimensions and reinforcing steel details appear to meet or exceed the minimum
requirements for two story construction in accordance with the applicable provisions of the 2006 IRC Sections
R403 and R 404 1 4 and Table R403 1
