I am very pleased to have read that this Council is taking up this extremely important matter.
YES, there should be a moratorium for short term rentals. As you are fully aware, long-term rentals are practically non existent. The few that might be had are very expensive. The area’s
rentals, other than motels and hotels, should be long-term.
So many current residents of middle and lower financial means are stuck when it comes to rentals. They are the backbone of the community. As you know, this has limited others from outside
the area that could fill job openings but cannot consider the City or Clallam or Jefferson counties given the short rental supply and the too-high rents.
Families that have been the area’s backbone, paying taxes, volunteering, and so forth and youngsters who may have graduated from college and want to live here are being pushed out.
Take lessons from the rest of the country, from what has occurred over decades in CA, RI, OR, NY, CO and in many other states, when both housing prices and rentals get tight and unaffordable.
And one wonders why there is so much homelessness.
Maintain the areas small ambiance and affordable living conditions. Do away with short-term rentals. Keep rentals for long-term renters and, dare I say, control the rents.
