HomeMy WebLinkAbout08212024 PSAB Meeting MinutesPUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD Virtual Meeting Port Angeles, Washington August 21, 2024, 6:00 pm This meeting was conducted as a hybrid meeting. CALL TO ORDER: Chair McGuire called the regular meeting of the Public Safety Advisory Board to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: John Hauck, Jessica Johnson, Mary Margolis, Michael McGuire, Sandy Sinnes, Kelsey Lane Evan Brown, (arrived 6:12pm) Members Absent: Finn Thompson Staff Present: Derrell Sharp, Fire Chief; Brian Smith, Police Chief; Aubrianna Howell, Acting Clerk PUBLIC COMMENT No public comment was received, and after verifying there was no one online who wished to speak, the Chair moved on to the next agenda item. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Mary made a motion and it was seconded by Sandy to Approve the July 17, 2024 minutes with the correction of May 15 minutes Hearing no objection, the motion carried 6-0. STAFF UPDATES Police Department Report – Chief Smith spoke to staffing in the police department specifically, the downtown resource officer and the code enforcement officer, and the outreach/prevention officer and the positive effect that has had on the department. The total department has been down 2-3 officers. One in the academy, one just graduated. Staffing will be difficult all next year. PenCom 11/21 that can work right now. Hopefully more qualified people will come along. JPSF EOC project is coming along. 46 DUI cases for the year. 9 assaults on officers this year. Saturday 171 911 calls due to Lightening Chief spoke to some statistic from the PenCom center including number of days work, average number of calls per day and year, average call length Board discussion followed. Fire Department Report – Chief Sharp spoke to Operation Shielding Hope and the new officer who has been working with the Community Paramedics. Spoke to the evolvement to the part Waiting to hear about SAFER Grant for FEMA that was put in in Spring. If approved, it would be 9 additional Firefighters. McKeen is getting cert for Inspector 1 & 2 to become a Fire Marshel Spoke to promotions and staffing, internal Duty Chief 5 volunteer firefighters starting the academy Wildland focus on training, spoke to how this was extremely important during a recent fire call in Port Angeles Paramedic training is going well for 2 Clark and Delano Staffed the Clallam County fair for safety measures and the rodeo and logging show, and demo derby. Collaboration with other districts Standby for the Junior Rodeo FEMA funding will be dispersed from the most recent winter storm damage. We should have a report back from them in the next week to replacing/restoring damaged property for use. Grant request for State of WA for Heat related Emergencies, been approved. This will allow automatic reimbursement. 532 calls for the month of July. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Chair opened the board up for discussion on the Work Plan for 2023-2024. Board spoke to traffic safety and the number of accidents near Del Guzzi street. Chief Smith gave further insight into the issue and some of the solutions that City staff is working towards. The board discussed Council passing new cameras for the downtown area. Board discussion followed.
