1. The left garage shear wall should have (3) Simpson A35 connectors at the
bottom chord to the top plate in order to act as a drag strut and transfer shear
to the wall (see encloseCl RoOf fram Ing Plan).
2. The interior shear walls on the se"ond floor do not require holdowns so we
are only concerned with shear transfer to the second floor diaphragm (see
enclosed Upper Floor Plan). These loads are taken into a"c:.ount, then, in the
2nd Floor/1st Floor RooF f:lnc:lll:lsis, whic.h providcs for thc transfcr to thc
foundation.

A series of tests were conducted at RadCO in Car$on. Califomia to determine the .hear resistance of gyp-
sum board ap"lied to one side of a weed stud partition (16" o.c.) using type S or W screws at different ,,,ac.

The following conclusions can be drawn from these tests:
1. The shear values were comparable for both type Sand W screws.
2. The shear values for parallel application were higher than tor perpendicular application.
3. The shear values tor 51." board were higher than for '/a" board.
4. The shear value mcreases with closer spacing ot the perimeter fasteners.
5. BaSed on other test results the shear values for screws are comparable to nails. all other conditions being
equal
