3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Viking Microfast® and MicrofastHP®
Quick Response Pendent Sprinklers
are small, thermosensitive spray sprin
klers available with several finishes
temperature ratings, and orifice sizes to
meet design requirements. The special
Poly finishes and Teflon® coatings can
be used in decorative applications
where colors are desired In addition,
these two finishes are corrosion resis-
tant and provide protection against
many corrosive environments.
The pip cap and`sealing assembly of the
sprinkler is held in place by a bulb tye
operating element. During fire condi-
tions, when the temperature around the
sprinkler reaches its operating tempera-
ture, the heat sensitive liquid in the
glass bulb expands, causing the bulb to
shatter releasing the pip -cap and seal-
ing spring assembly Water flowing
through the sprinkler orifice strikes the
sprinkler deflector forming a uniform
spray pattern to extinguish or control the
fire.

spray sprinklers available with several
different finishes and temperature rat-
ings to meet varying design require-
ments. The special Polyester and Tef-

against many corrosive environments
The pip cap and sealing assembly of the
sprinkler is held in place by a 3 mm
glass bulb. During fire conditions when
the temperature around the sprinkler
reaches its operating temperature the
heat sensitive liquid in the glass bulb
expands, causing the bulb to shatter
releasing the pip cap and sealing spring
assembly Water flowing through the
sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler de-

3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Viking Quick Response Dry Horizontal
Sidewall Sprinklers are thermosensitive
glass -bulb spray sprinklers suitable for
use in areas subject to freezing. They are
designed for dry systems and preaction
systems where it is necessary to prevent
water or condensation from entering the
supply nipples before the sprinklers oper
ate. They may also be installed in spaces
subject to freezing and supplied from a
wet system in an adjacent heated area.
The sprinkler assembly features a sealed
brass inlet and a durable threaded steel
barrel with an Electrodeposited Epoxy
Base coating. The sprinklers are of the
Model M design with a glass bulb operat-
ing element and horizontal sidewall deflec
tor The glass bulb operating element
meets the response criteria for quick re-
sponse sprinklers. Viking Dry HSW Sprin-
klers are available in finishes and tempera-
ture ratings to meet design requirements.
The seal at the threaded end of the as-
sembly is held in place by force transmit-
ted from the compression screw through
the glass bulb and internal parts, onto a
special sealing spring. During fire condi-
tions, the heat sensitive liquid in the glass
bulb expands, causing the glass to shat-
ter releasing the internal parts to open
the waterway Water flowing through the
sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler de-
flector forming a uniform spray pattern to
extinguish or control the fire.
Viking QR Dry HSW Sprinklers may be
installed with the barrel exposed (refer to
Figure 1 on page 106 b), or with one of
two escutcheon styles. For recessed in-
stallations, a recessed style escutcheon
with up to 5/8' (15,8 mm) adjustment
(see Figure 4) is available For standard
installations, the sprinkler is available
with an adjustable surface mounted es-
cutcheon, which allows up to 2" (50,8
mm) of adjustment (see Figures 2 and
3): Both escutcheon styles slide over -the

5. ORDERING INFORMATION
For proper shipment, specify model, fin-
ish, temperature rating, escutcheon type.
and length ('A Dimension). Viking Quick
Response Dry Horizontal Sidewall Sprin-
klers are ordered in specific lengths
noted as the A Dimension (see Figures
1 through 4). The A Dimension is the dis-
tance from the face of the fitting (tee) to
the finished surface of the wall in which it
is to be installed. The Viking Quick Re-
sponse Dry Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler
must be ordered and manufactured spe-
cifically for one of three styles of installa-
tion: with the adjustable recessed es-
cutcheon (see Figure 4), with the adjust-
able standard escutcheon (see Figures 2
and 3), or the plain barrel (see Figure 1).
For limits of adjustment for the recessed
escutcheon, see Figure 4 Details and
limits of adjustment for the standard es-
cutcheon style, with 2' (50,8 mm) of ad-
justment, are shown in Figures 2 and 3.
6. INSTALLATION
WARNING: Viking sprinklers are manu-
factured and tested to meet the rigid re-
quirements of approving agencies. The
sprinklers are designed to be installed in
accordance with recognized installation
standards. Deviation from the standards or
any alteration to the sprinkler after it leaves
the factory including, but not limited to:
painting, plating, coating, or modification,
may render the sprinkler inoperative and
will automatically nullify the approval and
any guarantee made by Viking.
A. Viking sprinklers are to be in-
stalled in accordance with the lat-
est edition of Viking technical
data, the latest standards of the
National Fire Protection Associa-
tion, FM Global, Loss Prevention
Council, Assemblee Pleniere,
Verband der Sachversicherer or
other similar organizations, and
also with provisions of govern-
mental codes, ordinances, and
standards whenever applicable.
The use of dry sprinklers may be
limited due to occupancy and haz
ard. Refer to the Authority Having
Jurisdiction prior to installation.
B Sprinklers must be handled with care
They must be stored in a cool. dry
place in their original shipping con-
tainer Never install sprinklers that
have been dropped, damaged in any
way or exposed to temperatures in
excess of the maximum ambient
temperature allowed (refer to the
temperature chart). Such sprinklers
should be destroyed. Never install
any glass -bulb sprinkler if the bulb is
cracked or if there is a loss of liquid
from the bulb If a glass bulb lacks the
appropriate amount of fluid, it should
be set aside and returned to Viking
(or an authorized Viking distributor)
for analysis as soon as possible If
the sprinkler is not returned to Viking,
it should be destroyed immediately
C Use only sprinklers listed for corro-
sive environments when subject to
corrosive atmospheres. Viking OR
Dry HSW Sprinklers are not intended
for use in corrosive environments.
D WARNING. Viking dry sprinklers are
to be installed in the 1' outlet or run of
malleable or ductile iron threaded tee
fittings that meet the dimensional re-
quirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class
150), or cast iron threaded tee fittings
that meet the dimensional require-
ments of ANSI B16.4 (Class 125),
even at branch line ends. The
threaded end of the dry sprinkler is de-
signed to allow the seal to penetrate
and extend into the fitting to a prede-
termined depth. This prevents con-
densation from accumulating and
freezing over the sprinkler seal.
1 DO NOT install the dry sidewall
sprinkler into a threaded elbow
coupling or any other fitting that
could interfere with thread pene-
tration. Such installation would
damage the brass seal.
For A Dimension:
1 Determine the distance from the face of tee to

AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION
A. SPRINKLER AND SPRAY NOZZLE
WRENCHES
Viking sprinkler wrenches are special in-
stallation tools specifically designed for
use with the various Viking sprinklers
and spray nozzles. The appropriate
wrenches must be used with the indi-
cated sprinklers and nozzles to provide
the proper leverage when tightening
sprinklers or nozzles and to minimize
slippage during installation.
Using wrenches other than the ones
designated for installation may damage
the sprinkler See Table 1 and Figure 1
for wrenches that are available for in-
stalling Viking sprinklers.
Wrench part numbers 10896W/B**

and 12143W/B provide the amount of le-
verage needed to tighten sprinklers and
spray nozzles into pipe fittings while pre-
venting sprinkler damage. No additional
tools are necessary with these wrenches.
"Wrench part number 10896W/B replaces
part number 05000CW /B, which is no lon-
ger available. Wrench part number

wrenches 08336W/B and 10366W/B
are designed for use with the sprinkler
contained in the protective shell. (A pro-
tective shell should be retained in the
spare sprinkler cabinet.)

B. SPRINKLER CABINETS
Viking sprinkler cabinets are metal en-
closures constructed to store an emer
gency supply of six or twelve spare
sprinklers and a sprinkler installation
wrench.
NFPA 13 requires a representative
number of each type and temperature
rating of sprinkler head to be kept in a
cabinet on the premises. NFPA 13 also
requires a special sprinkler wrench to be
provided in the cabinet. This allows for
immediate removal and replacement of
sprinklers that have operated or that
have become damaged.
Stock of spare sprinklers should include
sprinklers of all the types and tempera-
ture ratings as are installed in the sprin-
kler system in the following quantities:

Systems with water working pressures above
175 psi (12 bar) may require extra -heavy pat-
tern fittings. Viking Swing Check Valve flanges
are Ductile Iron ANSI B1642, Class 150, with a
maximum water working pressure of 250 psi (17.2
bar). ANSI B16.42, Class 150 flanges are NOT
compatible with ANSI Class 250 or Class 300
flanges. To mate the Viking Swing Check Valve
with ANSI Class 250 or Class 300 flanges, use the
grooved inlet/grooved- outlet style installed with

4 INSTALLATION
The Swing Check Valve must be installed in an area not subject to physical damage. When corrosive atmospheres and /or contami-
nated water supplies are present, it is the owner's responsibility to verify compatibility with the Swing Check Valve and associated
equipment.
Prior to installing the valve thoroughly flush the water supply piping to verify that no foreign matter is present.
The Swing Check Valve may be installed in the vertical position with direction of flow up or in the horizontal position with the ac
cess cover up
Systems with water working pressures above 1.75 psi (12 bar) may require extra -heavy pattern fittings. Viking Swing Check Valve
flanges are Ductile Iron ANSI B16 42, Class 150 with a maximum water working pressure of 250 psi (17.2 bar) ANSI B16 42,
Class 150 flanges are not compatible with ANSI Class 250 or Class 300 flanges. To mate the Viking Swing Check Valve with ANSI
Class 250 or Class 300 flanges, use the grooved inlet/grooved- outlet style installed with listed grooved /flanged adapters of the
appropriate pressure rating. For piping with grooved connections, the grooved -inlet /grooved outlet style Swing Check Valve may
be installed with listed grooved couplings of the appropriate pressure rating.
5. OPERATION (Refer to Figure 1)
Flow through the Viking Swing Check Valve lifts the rubber gasketed clapper (8, and 9) off the seat (12) to enter the sprinkler pip-
ing. When flow through the valve stops, the clapper (8) closes quickly. The rubber gasket (9) forms a tight seal against the brass
water seat (12) trapping pressure above the clapper and preventing reverse flow from sprinkler piping
Hydrostatic Test:
The Swing Check Valve is manufactured and listed for use at a maximum water working pressure of 250 psi (17.2 bar). The valve
is factory tested at 500 psi (34 5 bar) Check Valves may be hydrostatically tested (in accordance with NFPA 13) at 300 psi (20 7
bar) and /or 50 psi (3.4 bar) above the normal water working pressure for limited periods of time (two hours) for the purpose of ac
ceptance by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. If air testing is required, do not exceed 40 psi (2.8 bar) air pressure.
6. INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE
NOTICE The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire- protection system and devices in proper operating
condition.
The Viking Swing Check Valve must be kept free of foreign matter freezing conditions (when used on wet systems) corrosive
atmospheres, contaminated water supplies, and any condition that could impair its operation or damage the device
It is that the system be inspected and tested on a regular basis. The frequency of the inspections may vary due to
contaminated water supplies, corrosive water supplies and corrosive atmospheres. For minimum maintenance and inspection
requirements, refer to NFPA 25 In addition, the Authority Having Jurisdiction may have additional maintenance testing, and in-
spection requirements that must be followed.
WARNING Any system maintenance which involves placing a control valve or detection system out of sery
ice may eliminate the fire- protection capabilities of that system. Prior to proceeding, notify all the Authority
Having Jurisdiction. Consideration should be given to employment of a fire patrol in the affected areas.
6 -A. Five -Year Internal Inspection
Internal inspection of Swing Check Valves is recommended every five years unless inspections and tests indicate more fre-
quent inspections are required.
(Refer to Figure 1)
1 Notify the Authority Having Jurisdiction, remote station alarm monitors, and those in the area affected that the system will
be taken out of service. Consideration should be given to employment of a fire patrol in the affected areas.
2. Close the water supply main control valve placing the system out of service.
3. Open the main drain. If necessary open the system test valve to vent and completely drain the system.
4 Use the appropriate wrench to loosen and remove the cover screws (14), and remove the cover /clapper assembly (2
11).
5. Inspect the water seat (12). Wipe away all contaminants, dirt, and mineral deposits. DO NOT use solvents or abrasives.
6. Inspect the cover /clapper assembly (2 11) and the cover gasket (13) Test the hinged clapper (8) for freedom of move-
ment. Renew or replace damaged or worn parts as required.
CAUTION Never apply any lubricant to seats, gaskets, or any internal operating parts of the valve. Petroleum-
based grease or oil will damage rubber components and may prevent proper operation.

Dyna -Flow
High Strength Steel Pipe
The original high strength lightwall sprinkler pipe with hydraulics superior to Schedule -10
Dyna -Flow pipe is the ongmal' high
strength lightwall spnnlder pipe. Dyna
Flow has outstanding hydraulic
capabilities and is recognized as the
most popular alternative to Schedule 10
pipe. Lightweight, easy to cut and easy
to handle for installation. Dyna -Flow is a
valuable addition to any fire protection
system.
Superior Hydraulics
With an inside diameter of up to 11%
larger than Schedule -40 and up to 7%
larger than Schedule 10 Dyna -Flow
pipe hydraulics are exceptional. Larger
I.D.s enable Dyna -Flow and related
components, to be down -sized within the
system, thus increasing the potential for
job cost savings. For complete Hazen
Williams charts, refer to 'Dyna Flow
Hydrauhc Data Tables.
Coatings Fabrication
Dyna -Flow products are coated with
an environmentally approved and
specially formulated modified acrylic or
water -based coating. This durable coating
is pamtable. The black coating acts as
an excellent primer and is resistant to
weathering and U V degradation from
outdoor storage.
Metallurgical properties provide excellent
fabrication characteristics for end prep
finishes, welding and roll grooving.
There is no special process or equipment
needed for fabrication and installation.
The internal surface of all black Allied
Tube Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe
products up to 4.5000' in diameter is

Description

Ductile Iron threaded fittings (with
the exception of California Tees and
Street Elbows) conform to ANSI
B16 3 They are higher in strength
and more corrosion resistant than
cast iron fittings. The additional
strength is provided by the ductile
properties making up the fitting This
is accomplished by adding
magnesium while the iron is being
poured into it final cast shape. This
provides an advantage as the
fittings are not as susceptible to
leaks or cracking and they are also
lighter than standard cast iron.
Caution: Installers who have not used
ductile iron threaded fittings before
should be instructed that the fittings
are stronger than the pipe and over
tightening the fitting can create leaks
and cause damage to pipe threads. In
general, there is about one -half turn
difference between cast iron and
ductile iron fittings. Apply Teflon tape
or high quality pipe joint compound on
the male pipe threads and tighten two
to three turns beyond hand tight. If
you are using an automatic make -on
machine, please exercise caution in
setting your machine to the proper
parameters prior to tightening fittings
onto the male pipe threads.

than standard grooved fittings. Depending on the size and coupling used there may be interferences
at the bolt pads which requires repositioning of the coupling orientation. The use of flange adapters is
not recommended with Figures 51DS and 5195 fittings. Contact Tyco Fire Products for details.
