My roof was replaced by Hathaway Construction this summer with the job completed in early August.
The house was originally built in 1988 and had a cedar shake roof with plywood underlayment, standard
felt under the shakes and cedar fascia. The new roof is 30 -year architectural composite shingles with a
sort of plastic sheeting between the shingles and plywood. I am completely satisfied with the quality of
the job performed.
I requested the final inspection after the job was completed and Jim Lyerle came promptly to perform
the inspection. I was not home. When I got home my wife informed me that the permit could not be
signed off until 'drip edge' was applied to the gable ends. The original roof did not have these. The roof
when stripped down to bare wood was in perfect condition indicating that it is just fine without the 'drip
edge' The way the roof is constructed, there are no exposed plywood ends at the gables. The cedar
fascia covers the plywood ends and the shingles are in direct contact with the fascia. The shingles
project beyond the fascia about an inch. A narrow strip of shingle was applied all the way around the
perimeter of. the roof before the main shingles were applied.
In short, the roof is just fine the way it is. Going back now to install some sort of 'roof edge makes no
sense. After the roof job was completed, I paid to have the gutters and downspouts replaced. After
that, the entire exterior of the house was professionally painted. Installing the 'drip edges' now could
not be done without damaging the building exteriors, causing me more expense and trouble plus extra
painting at a point where painting outside will be tough with our normal weather
It is also my understanding that the building code for roofs does not specifically require these 'drip
ends'
With all of the above in mind, I request that my roof replacement permit be signed off without requiring
me to add 'drip edges' I would be happy to have another inspection performed, should that prove
necessary
