Members present were McGee, Gort, clankins, Driscoll and Strange. present was City Engineer Ahlvers. Minutes or the special meeting were read and approved. Also Due to the number of people interested in the question under consideration, meeting was adjonrned to the City Council Chambers. Inasmuch as this meeting was in a sense a postponed meeting from the prior week in which we had under consideration the variance request of the St. Mathews LUyheran Church, the entire meeting was devoted to this subject matter. The Chairman reported to the members of the Commission on a meeting which had been held during the week with the archetBct of the proposed new church; The City of Port Angeles being represented by Planning Com~ission members Strange and McGee, City Manager Vergeer and City Building Su~erintendent Dodge. This report was followed by further statements by Rev. Wegener in which he again asked the Planning Commission to approve the original application for a variance which would locate the building 8 feet from the sidewalk or 5 feet from the property line on the 13th Street side. During the discussion, the Planning Commission members indicated to Rev. Wegener that they were not favorable to the proposal and asked if they had not considered an alternate proposal as had been suggested to the archetect during his meeting in Port Angeles. Rev. !Negener then submitted an alternate proposal shewing a "setbaciC' of 12 feet from the ppoperty line and 15 feet from the sidewalk, stating that while the church could be constructed under the alternate proposal plan it would involve considerable extra expense as well as curtailing their seating capacity arangement. After a thorough discussion with various church members setting forth their ideas on the matter and mainly suggesting th~t the Planning Commission approve the original proposal, the Planning Commissim members adjourned in private to the Planning Commission room where the matter was discussed thoroughly among themselves. It was the unanimous opinion or those present that we were not too happy with the alternate proposal and that under no circumstances would we consider the original proposal. It was finally unanimously agreed th~ the Planning Commission recommend to the City Council that the variance request as covered in the alternate proposal be approved and the Chairman was designated to report our action to the church committeee who, in the meantime, were waiting in the Council Chambers. The Chairman duly reported the action of the Planning Commission to the church committee and it is his opinion that the church committee was not too satisfied with the Planning Commission decision, however, the Planning Commission members feel that the matter is a compromise and while they a re not too satisfied with the idea, reel that it is the best manner in which the matter could be disposed of under the circumstances.. No further business, meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M. Respectfully submitted, ~ ~ d;...21 /1 -' / cc to G. S. Vergeer cc to H. E. Dodge ...
