Members present were Hampton, Hankins, McGee, Reiners and Strange. Also present was City Engineer Ah!vers. ~ Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Under uhfinished business, Connnission again considered the application for a zoning variance on Lot-9, Block 290 Townsite which is located at the South- East corner of 9th & Lincoln Streets. This application had been tabled at a prior meeting for future consideration. Dr. Keith Thompson, current applicant being present explained his proposal to construct a dental office, building proposed to be of brick construction, bungalow type, with hip roof that would fit in well with the residential area abutting on this property. He proposed the usual set back in accordance with other houses in that area with a lawn in front and a black top parking area for patients in the rear with the balance of the lot in lawn. Nearby property owners and residents present at our meeting. Tony Masi and Charles Watts who had appeared at our previous meeting when this matter was under consideration, spoke in favor of the variance. After considerable discussion, it was unanimously agreed by the members of the Commission that we recommend to the City Council that the variance be granted. e Next order of business was the consideration of a petition to vacate a portion of the alley in Block-3, Lot-l~, Cains Subidivion, being in the vicinity of Fourth and Jones Streets. Inasmuch as the northerly half of this alley had been vacated by ordinance #1141 in 1945 and there appearing to be no use could be made of the balance of thealley, it was the unanimous opinion of the Planning Commission that we recommend to the City Council that the petition be granted. Communications from the School Board of District #17 setting forth their problems relative to the blocking of Second Street in the vicinity of the Washington School during school hours was read; also a petition directed to the School Board calling for an over or under pass was read. The matter was discussed at length, but no conclusions were reached at this time and the subject was laid on the table ror future consideration. The Chairman suggested that the members of the Commission give some thought to the automobile parking problem in the business district with a view, if possible, to orfer some suggestions to the Port Commission on the use of the new filled area in the vicinity of Front Street.
