Members present were Lamoureux, Hampton, McGee, Gort and Strange. Also '. present was City Engineer Ahlvers. Minutes of the regular meetin of March 16th were read and approved. Chairman read a letter from City Manager G. S. Vergeer, dated March 19t~, 1954, calling matters to the attention of the Planning Commission that had been refered to him by the City Council. First subject under discussion was a request from Mr. Jenson of the Shell Oil Company for an increase in driveway space in fromt of the Coca Cola Building on East First Street to facilitate entrance into the Shell Service Station located on adjacent lot. After a thorough" discussion, it was decided to redommend that the application be denied and that the Planning Commission be recorded as being opposed to excess driveways across the sidewalk area because of the hazard presented to pedestrian traffic. A considerable discussion was had on the advisability of recommending the adoption of the Pacific Coast Building Code by the City of Port Angeles and it was decided that the several members familiarize the~selves with the Code and that the matter be brought up at a later date for action. The matter of the petition of the Louis Elterich Company for a zoning ordinance variance on Lots 10-11-12-13-14 and 15 of Block-2 of Doyle's Subdivision of Port Angeles, was read and a hearing date on the petition was set for t3: 00 P. M. Tuesday, May 4th, 1954. Hearing to beheld in the Council Chambers in the Police Department Building at Front & Oak Streets and the Chairman was ordered to advise Mr. Dodge of the above. . Under general discussion, the subject of the Planning Commission's recommendation of the vacation of a certain portion of West eth Street to SChool District #17, it was P9inted out that in the event the Council does not see fit to vacate this street, it should be thoroughly kept in mind, in the event of future street improvements in that area, that we recommend the improvement of 7th Street westerly from "r" Street rather than 8th Street in order that the City may not be faced in the future with a situation similar to Fourth Street in front of the Roosevelt School or Second Street at the rear of the Washington School where it is common practice to place restrictions on traffic during schooi hours.
