Meeting held in the Council Chambers in the Police Department Building at Front and Oak Streets. Members present were Lamoureux, Hampton, McGee, Gort, St ewart and Strange. Also present were City Engineer Ahlvers and City Building Inspector Dodge. Minutes of the regular meeting of April 6th were read and approved. Meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. and, as time for official hearihg on zoning ordinance variance had been set for 8:06 P.M., Chairman suggested the matter of building code adoption be taken up as first order of business. Under this heading, a general discussion was held on the advisability of the City of Port Angel~B adopting some type of building code, which had been forcibly brought out in recent' meetings, was so badly needed. The C0J!1D11ssion listened to a report from Mr. Dodge, the City Building Inspector, Who, among other things, read a letter from the Chief Building Insp.ector of the City of Tacoma setting forth the advantages to be gained by the adoption of a building code. After a thoroug~ discussion, during which it was brought out the objectable practice of bringing into our City substandard houses from defunct housing projects, it was moved, seconded and unanimously passed, by those present, that the Planning Commission recommend to the City Council that'the City of Port Angeles take steps to join the Pacific Coast Building Officials Conference and that they adopt the Pacific Coast Building Code in short form. Next order of business was the hearing on a zoning variance on the North one-half of Block-2, Doyle's Subdivision of Port Ange~s, which had been petitioned for by the Louis Elterich Company. Sever~l residents of the imediate area were present at our meeting and all present seemed to speak in opposition to the petition, citing their objections thereto which seemed to center mainly around unsightliness, the repatring of heaving equipment with related noises, the operation of welding equipment as related to television interference and the damage to the street by the moving in and out of heavy equipment. There were no favorable reports on the petition with the exception of Mr. Elterich and Mr. Myron Carlson. After this lengthy hearing, which, consumed an hour, the Chairman declared the Planning Commission would take the matter under advisement and render a decision at the next regular meeting May 18th. Mr. Guy Bellinger, Sr. presented a verbal request for a preliminary approval of a subdivision of the South one-half of suburban 10t-77 of Port Ange~s Townsite. The proposed subdivision, while conf~rming 1n most respects to the general layout of City property, does not, however, ,contain a proposed alleyway and to this several members of the Commission objected. The final decision on this matter was taken under advisement and it also will be rendered at the next regular meeting. No further business appearing, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
