Fifth Street Port Angeles, WA 98362 Dear Ms. Hurd: The Michael Trebert Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is requesting the City Council of Port Angeles to pass a Proclamation proclaiming the week beginning September 17 through September 23, 2014, as "Constitution Week". The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR). In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U. S. Congress and signed into Public Law#915 on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The aims of the celebration are to (1) emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity; (2) infonn the people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and(3) encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. Additionally, we request the participation of city governments and individuals to ring bells on September 17th at 1:00 P.M. (PST) to celebrate "Bells Across America" so coast to coast bells will ring out our freedom as Americans. Thank you for considering our request for a proclamation. We would be honored to be present at the council meeting when, or if, this proclamation is passed. Please notify me at my number listed below. Sincerely, i Jams Flanagan, Chairman Michael Trebert Chapter National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution 171 Ivy Lane Port Angeles, WA 98362 (360)457-1446
