Our interests include environmental and health issues throughout our usual and accustom lands, which includes this landfill restoration site. It is my understanding the City's project provides a near permanent solution to the decades old refuse that would eventually fall into the environmentally sensitive Straits of Juan de Fuca. This project has significant environmental importance as well as economic development opportunities for existing and future businesses that will want to locate in Clallam County, as well as the tourism industry. We strongly encourage support for the Department Ecology budget line item of$2.5 million for 100% removal of the refuse from the bluff area. Additionally, your support for the supplemental $2.0 million in funding to assist with the removal of the asbestos- containing material currently being encountered in the excavations is requested. This project represents a significant environmental recovery challenge in our economically depressed community. Port Angeles is to be commended for having committed initial funding to start the cleanup processes. However the residents of this rural economically challenged region cannot do it alone. The financial assistance and support from the State can contribute to support the stabilization of solid waste utility rates for residents, and provide a stable foundation for business development and job generation.
