Dear Mayor DiGuilio and City Council:
I am writing to urge you to take action and oppose the Navy's proposed Pacific Northwest
Electronic Warfare Range (EWR). As a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, Olympic
National Park is a precious treasure that deserves immediate protection from the impending
threat of increased Navy growler activity. In their environmental documents and public
meetings, the Navy has presented inconclusive and ambiguous information. It doesn't require
much imagination to understand the significantly destructive impact of growler
electromagnetic radiation, jet noise and pollution on the wilderness, wildlife and humans who
visit and live close by this tranquil place prized for its unique natural beauty. Please refer to
Dahr Jamail's extensive research findings delineated in "Documents Show Navy's Electronic
Warfare Training Would Harm Humans and Wildlife" posted December 15, 2014 at
Truth-out.org.
As I write this letter and hear the deafening roar of an overhead Navy jet at the edge of the
Olympic National Park wilderness where I live, I assure you the threat of Navy activity is real
and must be stopped now. We all have the responsibility to be obligated stewards of this
pristine and wild natural place before the way we know it is lost forever. Preservation was
precisely the goal of President Theodore Roosevelt when he issued in 1909 the Mount
Olympic National Proclamation. Although I have owned my home here for ten years, I finally
retired in September and relocated from Florida where I saw development and military activity
ruin untouched natural beauty so that any true remains of it are too remote to visit. My
greatest joy in moving to what I have perceived to be the environmentally progressive state of
Washington has been hiking in Olympic. To be able to visit such a pristine place so close to
my home has been the greatest privilege of my life. The recorded millions of annual visitors
to Olympic National Park also have a right to experience Olympic in its most untouched state.
You have a great opportunity to assert visionary leadership now when time is so critical. Let's
not lose what would be a regrettably irretrievable loss. Please advocate for the protection of
Olympic National Park and stop the Navy's potentially disastrous activity.
Thanks so much.
Sin erely,
