HomeMy WebLinkAboutScooter Chapman O\�y OF PORT gNCF�F,r PROCLAMATION In Recognition of THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF Howard "Scooter" Chapman WHEREAS, sports announcer, writer, and local legend, with a career spanning four decades, Howard "Scooter" Chapman has been announcing all of the major sporting events of Port Angeles and outlying areas, becoming the voice of our Port Angeles High School teams for almost 61 years; and WHEREAS, Scooter has been involved with radio since 1950 while attending Roosevelt High School, when KONP hired him as a spotter for football games and score keeper for basketball games; and WHEREAS, after graduating from Roosevelt, Scooter attended the University of Washington for one year but returned to Port Angeles long enough to marry his high school sweetheart Loretta and join the army; and WHEREAS, while in the service, he got an education in radio and television as a broadcast specialist in the Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago from 1957-1959, while in his last year of service, he was the producer and director of the then new US Army Television Hometown News center team from the Fifth Anny; and WHEREAS, after his time in the service ended, he began working as a sports editor for the Port Angeles Evening News and radio sports director for KONP, recalling many a time he would write stories for the paper as he was calling games over the radio; and WHEREAS, in 2011, Scooter was named to the Hall of Fame Class of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association(WIAA), an accolade that very few broadcasters and writers receive; and WHEREAS, Scooter recently stepped down as Western Peninsula Umpires Assigning Secretary after 30 years of service, but continues to umpire baseball and softball games; and WHEREAS, Scooter helped promote numerous young athletes from the Port Angeles area and has done so for many years. He continues to be involved in his community as a member of the Port Angeles Lions Club. He emcees various Port Angeles events, including the Great Olympic Peninsula Duck Derby and the Olympic Medical Center Foundation's Festival of Trees. NOW,THEREFORE,I,Dan Di Guilio,Mayor,ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF PORT ANGELES,do hereby RECOGNIZE Scooter Chapman for his contributions to our local radio and newspaper. Someone once said your blood runs green and white, for the colors of your Roughriders.
