The design of the rain gardens force pedestrians to walk in the traveled way of the city streets. Yes, I know there were access ramps installed with the rain gardens but without connecting sidewalks the ramps are useless. The ramps, which were meant to facilitate pedestrians and wheelchairs, force people into the traveled way in order to walk around them or even to access them. The ramps, without sidewalks, create an unsafe conditions that did not exist before the rain gardens were constructed. Especially, with the rain gardens in close proximity to Hamilton grade school, there is a danger to our young school children while walking to school. I am sure there are several parents, like my son, that feel walking to school is too dangerous with the rain gardens in place and no sidewalks. As a results many children that should be walking are instead being driven to school which makes the situation worse by adding to the average daily traffic count in an already pedestrian unfriendly environment. I suggest that the City apply for a Safe Route to School grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation and remedy this dangerous situation as soon as possible. This is a good program and the city would be letting down its most vulnerable citizens if it did not take advantage of the grant. I also suggest that you walk from mid-block of W 511,, in between K and L Streets,to Hamilton School at the same time school children should be walking. And,please, do this near the winter solstice so you get the full feeling of being scared for your life. I know I constantly worry about my granddaughter.
