Thank you for your service to our home tow This letter is prompted by the latest American Dental Association News reminding us that Port Angeles is not alone in enjoying the benefits of carefully monitored community water fluoridation. We support Port Angeles community water fluoridation because it is needed, effective, safe and ethical. We ask you to do the same. Community water fluoridation benefits citizens of all ages but especially our most vulnerable children. If we take water fluoridation from them, too many kids will not get the cavity reducing benefit of fluoride through prescription drops and tablets. Research shows that communities like ours save approximately$38 in dental treatment costs for every dollar spent on water fluoridation. As dentists who treat patients in our most vulnerable populations we know that along with limiting sugar intake, good home care, fluoride toothpaste and routine dental visits, community water fluoridation is an important strategy for decreasing dental disease for young and old alike. You may trust 70 years of research proving that water fluoridated at appropriate levels is safe for people, safe for our environment and is effective in reducing the number of cavities we may get. Monitored community water fluoridation is endorsed by a multitude of respected health organizations that include the World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Indian Health Service and the United States Surgeon General to name a few. Our nation's court system has again and again affirmed that community water fluoridation is ethical and appropriate. We support community water fluoridation and we encourage the Port Angeles City Council to continue water fluoridation as it is safe, effective, appropriate and quite simply the right thing to do.
