HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Boys in the Boat DayPROCLAMATION In Recognition of October 29th, 2016 as "The Boys in the Boat Day" WHEREAS, the City of Port Angeles wishes to recognize the true story of triumph, despite all odds, during the 1936 Summer Olympics when the young men of the University of Washington rowing team rose to victory; and WHEREAS, "The Boys in the Boat," by Daniel James Brown illustrates the significance of teamwork, with one member of the team, Joe Rantz, saying to the author, "it's not just about me," and so it is that their story recognizes not just the success of one rower, but the entire team; and WHEREAS, in honor of that victorious team, our local rowing club, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association, wishes to celebrate the sport of rowing and the importance of their club's efforts to continue sharing the traditions of the sport; and WHEREAS, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association Club began in 2007 as a nonprofit organization to provide a safe and fun opportunity for the community to participate in an organized sport that requires teamwork and cooperation, in a geographic area so well suited for it; and WHEREAS, in honor of the team who won the gold in 1936, and the author, Daniel James Brown, for sharing the true story, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association is celebrating with "Kids in the Boat Day" — an afternoon filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy; and WHEREAS, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association wishes to invite the community to their event where they can learn more about the sport of rowing and even become a part of the organization and its traditions. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Patrick Downie, Mayor, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF PORT ANGELES, do hereby RECOGNIZE the efforts of the 1936 American Rowing team, who rose up through individual and collective hardships, ultimately winning an Olympic gold medal. In honor of their remarkable accomplishment, the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association wishes to recognize those young men by sharing their passion for the sport, and the joy of teamwork, with the whole community through the "Kids in the Boat Day" celebration, to ensure continued success of the rowing program for future generations.
