The point I was attempting to make las night is that your ultra-authoritarian manner is
off-putting to us mere mortals and you are making it easier for people to vote for a change
in city govemance. Every conversation I have had with you is punctuated by obvious
distrust and anger. Now I don't know if you use anger to control the conversation or if
you cannot control your emotions. I do know this-leadership requires you to listen to the
other side and not presume an authoritarian "know-it-all position.
I know you will be gone at the end ofthis year and will not have to work within the mess
you helped create. In the meantime you could lessen the angst suffered by the residents if
you showed more respect to those who come to share their views with council.
I'm not sure you realize the effort that goes into getting up offthe easy chair and coming
down 1o city council meetings to take part in our democracy. I'm not sure you realize
how ridiculous it is when yor.r, and the city council, limit feedback from the residents to 3
minutes every two weeks.
It is obvious you and several of your fellow council members feel the public comment
period isjuS one more indignity you must endure as you carry on yourlofty business.
I can assure you there many in the city, and a few in the audience, who study city issues to
at least the detail that you and other council members do. when you limit fledback you
are sending the signal that residents are not informed enough to provide feedback sojust
sit dovm and let us adults handle this goveming business. These are the people forking
over $ 130 million per year to keep the lights on and staffpaid.
You have muffed the fluoride issue at least twice since taking office and people know it.
when you finally did come around to a sane decision it was only to save your skin and
not out of consideration for the angst you and the fluoride four created within the city
when you disavowed the advisory vote that carne down crearry against fluoride. you
weren't listening. or, ifyou were, you treated the 2,500 who voied..no" as if they were
children who didn't know what was good for them and, in your etemaly pa.temal manner,
voted agains the will ofthe people. Ifthis initiative is successfirl we havl vou to thank
t1 it It will go down in city history as occurring on your watch. Treating'Eloir" ; t;"did last night only adds to your culpability.
Authority is not leadership. Ifyou love this city as much as you say you do then you need
to work on your leadership skills and let go your authoritarian attitude. It does not serve
yot1 nor the city, very well.
I love this cig and intend to spend the rest of my days here. I waat a city that is inclusive
and interested in the best that can be provided to everyone-not just to those in power.
