I have reviewed the information that you have submitted for the proposed paint spray booths to
be installed at the Westport cabinet shop in Port Angeles.
Based upon my review of the information provided, it is clear that the booths will meet the
requirements of both NFP A 33 and OSHA. Article 45 of the Uniform Fire Code states that the
average air velocity over the open face of the booth OR the booth cross section shall not be less
than 100 lineal feet per minute. Your plans show that the face of the booth has an area of 192
square feet. Since 24,000 CFM will be provided, the air flow across the open face should be
approximately 4800 CFM greater than the required minimum.
The booth cross section in the direction of airflow during spray operations is approximately 480
square feet. At 24,000 CFM, only 50% of the required velocity would be provided. A closer look
at the plans provided shows that the filters at the sides of the booth have a total area of
approximately 176 square feet. At 24,000 CFM, the air flow across the filters should be 6400
CFM greater than required.
Since the Uniform Fire Code stipulates that the air velocity can be measured at the face of the
booth OR through the cross section, I will accept the booths as designed since the air velocity
across the face and aCross the filters is in excess of the required minimum. My one stipulation
will be that the booths be listed by an independent third party listing agency such as ETL, as you
suggested.
Additionally, I will require a complete set of plans and specifications for the booth, including the
fire suppression system, prior to installation.
