Oear Jim,
we are writing you because we are confident you love the North olympic Peninsula, as we do, and we
want to share what we believe is a Sreat oPportunity for all of us.
Richard ONeill and James Garlicl! two worldrlass musicians who also love this placg where they grew
up, have worked with our wonderful Port Angeles Symphony to establish what they and we believe will be an
outstanding annual addition to our area's economic well-beinB and educational resources while providing
three days of exceptional music.
Details are enclosed, but here are some indications of the amazing quality they've already organized.
Violist O'Neill, EMMY Award Winner, two-time GRAMMY nominee and Avery Fisher career Grant
recipient has appeared as a soloist with many presti8ious orchestras in this country and around the world.
Sales of hls nine solo albums have exceeded 2m,m0. The beauty of James GarliclCs violin performance
already was evident as a Port Angeles HiEh School student. He performs weekly with the Minnesota
orchestra and has appeared as a soloist, concertmaster and conductor around the United States. He led
Cuban and American musicians in a historic performance in Cuba.
Their enthusiasm and contacts among people in the top tiers of the musical performance world have
enabled them to be joined by:
. Jeremy Oenk, a pianist Ihe /Vew york 77mes has declared to be someone "you want to hear no
matter what he performs."
. cellist Ani Aznavoorian, described by lhe Strod maSazine as having "scorchin8ly committed
performances that wrin8 every last drop of emotion out of the music."
. violinist Elisa Barston, praised for her "glowing sound" and 'technical aplornb" W The strod.
we have agreed to seek a small group offoundinS sponsors and supporters to help launch the festival.
The Music on the Strait sheet provides details about options and benefits, and the website coming soon will
explain more. Partnership with the Port Angeles Symphony makes contributions taxdeductible.
Our primary Soal is raising 55,000 toward expenses of ccartistic director and performer Richard O' Neill.
We have known this young man since Jim was his doctor at Peninsula Children's Clinic and heard him play
when he lived in Sequim and performed locally. We renewed our friendship when he stayed with us as he
and James were preparing for their concerto with the Port Angeles Symphony last fall. That gave us a chance
to learn more about how he gives of himseff even beyond his music. He coached young musicians and met
with Koreans who help him provide help for the homeless in that country. A Goodwill Ambassador for the
Korean Red Cross, CARE and UNICEF, he runs marathons for charity.
Please consider becoming part of this historic inautural year. Feel free to contact us if you'd like to talk
with us about our support for Richard ONeill and our first Music on the Strait festival.
